The PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man has been applauded for its phenomenal depiction of New York, with many players considering it the best recreation of the city to date. Local New Yorkers, however, may have noticed that the game’s version is not as exact as some may believe.
Developed by Insomiac Games, Marvel’s Spider-Man puts the player in the shoes of Peter Parker as he comes face to face with a variety of his classic villains. Spidey wouldn’t be himself without his beloved New York City however, and Insomniac has taken great care in recreating this open world environment as closely as possible. Players can swing between iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building while also being able to discover some exclusive Marvel Universe locations.
Fans of the game have likely stumbled upon Avengers Tower during their web swinging adventures, but the city is filled with plenty more unique locations. Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones all have their own locations in the game, though the characters never make an appearance themselves. In Midtown, players can find Rand Corporation, belonging to the immortal Iron Fist, Danny Rand. Careful observers can locate the sign to Jessica Jones’ detective agency, Alias Investigations in the center of Hell’s Kitchen. Quite close by, fans can find the Nelson & Murdock law firm belonging to Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil. While these locations do not exist in the actual New York, they are a nice nod to the in-universe New York City that Peter Parker inhabits.
Marvel’s Spider-Man has included some of the most iconic landmarks in the New York City skyline. The One World Trade Center makes its debut as the tallest building in Insomniac’s Manhattan. The in-game design is slightly different, however, having been based off of the original 2002 tower design rather than the one that was eventually built.
New York wouldn’t be the city that it is without the careful inclusion of Central Park. This massive area of green has been expertly rendered in Marvel’s Spider-Man to accurately include a variety of lakes and open spaces that stick quite closely to the actual park. The famed NYC venue, Radio City Music Hall, can also be seen in painstaking detail, an almost perfect one-to-one recreation of the real deal. Insomniac carried over this level of detail to their rendering of St. Patrick’s Cathedral as well, and its phenomenal architecture has been careful reproduced with utmost precision. Other notable inclusions are the United Nations Headquarters, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Union Station, with Union Station being the only building Marvel’s Spider-Man players can actually enter.
Unfortunately, Insomniac’s New York does lack a few iconic buildings. As shown in the Dan Allen Gaming video above, one of NYC’s most famous museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has been replaced with the fictitious Manhattan Museum of Contemporary Art. Unfortunately, these two buildings look nothing alike. The Charging Bull statue, located in the Financial District of Manhattan, has been replaced with a statue of the Marvel character, Lockjaw. The statue of George Washington in Union Square has also received a replacement, with William Henry Seward taking his place instead.
Marvel’s Spider-Man’s NYC has, overall, been shrunken down, and this led to many of the city’s districts and landmarks being combined. For example, Chinatown has been transformed to encompass Lower East Side, East Village, and Little Italy, when in actuality these districts are quite separate from each other. Even so, Insomniac has meticulously and successfully recreated this iconic city in a way that video games never have before. With Insomniac’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales title slated to release for the PS5, it will be exciting to see what Insomniac has in store for the Big Apple next.
