How An XMen Teenager Took Down The Scarlet Witch

An X-Men teenager, Hope Summers, once successfully beat down Scarlet Witch. Back in 2012, the X-Men and the Avengers collided in an epic summer crossover. The Phoenix Force returned to Earth, and the Avengers feared it would mean the end of the world; the X-Men believed it offered literal hope to the mutant race.

Years ago, her mind fragmenting and under the influence of a demonic entity, Scarlet Witch had uttered a curse that rewrote reality itself. “No more mutants,” she had intoned, and as a result the mutant race was brought to the brink of extinction. Less than 200 mutants remained with an active X gene, far too few to keep the race going. Cyclops pinned all his hopes on a so-called “Mutant Messiah,” Hope Summers, who was prophesied to be the one to restore mutants – and who was mysteriously tied to the Phoenix Force. When the Phoenix Force finally arrived, though, its power was fragmented by the Avengers, and Hope seemed to have missed her destiny.

The Phoenix-powered mutants began to establish a new world order, in which they ruled and humans were forcibly disarmed. Disturbed, the Avengers realized they had no choice but to train Hope Summers, and they took her to the city of K’un-Lun. There, in Avengers Vs. X-Men: Versus #6, Hope finally got the chance to confront the woman who had wiped out the mutant race. They didn’t exactly hit it off.

Scarlet Witch’s primary power is the ability to manipulate reality itself, and by this point in time she felt she’d mastered her powers. In contrast, Hope Summers is an Omega mutant who possesses the ability to mimic the powers of those around her. Because this is an imitiative ability, Wanda assumed a lack of experience would mean she was no threat. As a result, furious over her broken nose, Scarlet Witch attempted to forcibly send Hope back to her bedroom as punishment. To her shock, Hope blocked the attack, and within seconds the two were trading devastating attacks. Reality itself began to fracture, with the entire Northern Hemisphere affected. The Phoenix Force wasn’t the only threat to Earth’s continued existence; this battle along threatened to destroy the world.

Fortunately Scarlet Witch sensed the danger, and asked Hope to dial it down. As the power flares subsided, Captain America intervened, challenging them both to stand down. To his relief, they did so, and under Steve Rogers’ stern gaze Hope stepped forward to shake Wanda’s hand. For a brief moment it looked as though a truce had been called – until Hope Summers lashed out with an unexpected knockout blow. The X-Men’s most powerful teenager had successfully beaten Scarlet Witch, leaving Captain America breathing an exasperated sigh.
