The newest playable character in the battle royale game Apex Legends, the jet-pack toting mercenary code-named Valkyrie, takes a lot after her father, a mercenary antagonist from Respawn Entertainment’s previous shooter game Titanfall 2. Apex Legends has never been shy about its status as a semi-sequel to Titanfall 2, but the cinematic trailer and gameplay footage for Valkyrie gives fans of the franchise a better look at how the war-torn setting of the Titanfall games transitioned into the mostly post-war setting of Apex Legends. It also makes gamers who beat the Titanfall 2 single-player campaign feel very awkward about how they killed a little girl’s dad.

The setting of Titanfall 1, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends, a classic science fiction setting of space travel and far-flung interstellar colonies, is defined by an event called the Frontier Wars, a conflict between militarized Core World corporations like the IMC and the Frontier Militia mustered by colonies seeking independence (the similarities between this plot, the original Star Wars trilogy, and the historical American Revolution are fairly easy to notice). During this war, unscrupulous mercenary companies plied their trade, contracted by employers to destroy their enemies and treat the laws of war more as suggestions. One of these mercenary companies, the Apex Predators, was led by an amoral if sporting individual named Kuben Blisk.

Titanfall 1 and Titanfall 2 have narratives centered around the aforementioned Frontier War, blending FPS combat with wall-running acrobatics and destructive brawling between armored Titans, which are mechas players summon to the battlefield via dramatic orbital drops. In these games, Kuben Blisk and his menagerie of mercs are antagonists and bosses the players must run and gun their way past. In Apex Legends, years after the war, an older Kuben Blisk retired from the mercenary business to found the Apex Games, a sporting event where outlaws, champions, and rogues shoot each other up in an arena with a constantly shrinking force field boundary. Viper, one of the deadliest boss encounters in Titanfall 2, was one of Blisk’s Apex Predator mercenaries, while Valkyrie, his daughter, is one of the newest additions to Blisk’s stable of “Legends.”

Player encounter Viper in the 8th mission of Titanfall 2, on top of the hull of a starship flying through the skies of an alien world. He pilots a customized version of the “Northstar” Titan players can use in multiplayer matches, a sniper mech capable of flying for long stretches of time and launching truly ludicrous numbers of missiles. He presents himself as a cocky ace pilot when fighting the player, darting out of the path of their gunshots and taunting them with remarks such as “the skies belong to me” and “speed is life.”

In the recently released cinematic trailer for Apex Legends, the latest in the “Stories From The Outlands” video series, gamers finally get to see Viper’s face (he looks good in a mustache) and learn more about his backstory. Going by the worn-out Northstar chassis in his homestead’s barn, he appears to have been a mercenary Pilot for years before retiring on his home world and taking a job with the local air force to better care for his family and young daughter. Then, when his daughter took his old Northstar for a joy-ride, nearly got herself killed, and presumably broke dozens of aerospace laws, he reluctantly chose to return the mercenary trade (most likely to pay off the legal fines his daughter); a choice that led to his death at the hand of Titanfall 2 protagonists Jack Cooper and BT-7274.

Valkyrie From Apex Legends Followed In Her Father’s Footsteps

With the newest season of Apex Legends comes a new character called Valkyrie, who, going by the various gameplay trailers, will be a “Legend” with flight abilities centered around the use of a potent jetpack coupled with should-mounted missile silos – essentially, a scaled-down version of the Northstar Titan her dad piloted.

In the new “Stories From The Outlands” video, players see a young Valkyrie’s painful adoration of her ace pilot father and her reckless childhood attempts to emulate him. As an adult, Valkyrie is torn between anger at Kuben Blisk for dragging her dad back into the mercenary business and anger at herself for (in her mind) driving her dad away, and enters the dangerous Apex Games arenas in the hopes of stepping out of her dad’s long shadow and surpassing him as a Pilot. The irony, of course, is that Viper, her father, made all the sacrifices he did in the hopes she’d never have to risk her life in the business of death.
