Army of the Dead’s end credits song might subtly hint at the theory that the movie takes place in a time loop. Zack Snyder’s zombie heist movie has been thoroughly dissected and subjected to many fan theories since its debut on Netflix, and viewers will have plenty more to chew on in its upcoming prequel Army of Thieves, along with its upcoming animated prequel series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. Still, the time loop theory has been a big curveball in the talk about Army of the Dead.

One of the main sources for the time loop theory lies in a scene with Dieter and Vanderohe. Upon seeing a collection of rotting human skeletons near the safe the team is tasked with cracking, Vanderohe speculates the team is actually caught in a time loop, repeating the same heist over and over. Whether he was simply pulling fan-favorite character Dieter’s leg here or not, fans have latched onto this as well as other small clues of a time loop being at play in the film. However, a significant one may have flown completely under the radar, despite being the opening and end credits of the film.

The intro sequence prior to Army of the Dead’s opening credits involves a newlywed couple, who play Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” on their car radio. The song includes the lyrics “We’re caught in a trap, I can’t walk out”, fitting words indeed for the conundrum of being stuck in a time loop. The song is also heard again over Army of the Dead’s end credits, and this could be what really points to it as a hint that a time loop is at work in the story.

While the lyrics themselves could be read as both an apt description of a time loop in general and a hint of Army of the Dead involving one, the fact that Zack Snyder brought the song back for a second time in the end credits could be the real giveaway. The movie is, in a sense, returning right to where it began by playing “Suspicious Minds” for a second time once the story itself has come to an end. If Snyder intended it as a tip-off to Army of the Dead’s time loop, it’s definitely the movie’s most subtle one, but it could also be the most decisive one by marking a repetition in its own way.

Of course, Army of the Dead is hardly the first movie to use a song on its soundtrack at more than one point, so by itself, it doesn’t necessarily verify that the time loop fan theory is on the money. Still, with robot zombies, Area 51, and theories about the zombies being aliens in its toolbox, Army of the Dead is as different a zombie movie as the world has seen in ages. Snyder’s use of “Suspicious Minds” at the beginning and end of the movie could very well be a wink and a nod on the movie’s part that there might be more mileage than anyone realizes in the film’s time loop fan theory.
