A new character will take up the titular mantle in Batwoman season 2 and some recent promotional art suggests she’ll have a brand-new suit with which to fight crime. Batwoman served as the most recent addition to The CW’s thriving collection of DC Comics-inspired shows known as the Arrowverse. Ruby Rose first appeared as Batman in the Elseworlds crossover event in 2018, and then she went on to headline her own solo series and featured more centrally in an ambitious Crisis on Infinite Earths adaptation. Soon after, however, it was announced that Rose would be exiting Batwoman.

For a time, it was expected that somebody else would merely take over the Kate Kane role. Showrunner Caroline Dries considered that idea since episodes of Batwoman season 2 were already written and storylines planned. Ultimately, though, Dries and producer Greg Berlanti opted to replace Kate with an entirely original character instead. Javicia Leslie was later confirmed to have landed the part of Ryan Wilder, a character from the exact opposite background to Kate. How Kate Kane’s absence will be explained and how exactly Ryan will find herself officially brought on to the team remains the subject of much speculation and theorizing.

Whatever the case may be, it has recently been suggested that Ryan won’t merely slip into Kate’s established suit. Instead, she will get either an entirely new one or one that’s heavily upgraded. Ryan’s suit was teased in new artwork depicting the DC Multiverse. The piece was drawn by popular comic book artist and DC Comics’ chief creative Jim Lee. Swinging into action alongside Supergirl, there’s no doubt that it’s Leslie’s iteration. The most striking difference is that of the cape. Rather than the jet-black one worn by Kate Kane, Ryan’s will be a pure red. As such, Ryan’s version will be more in line with the source material and more aptly live up to the nickname of The Scarlet Knight.

The addition of extra red also extends to Batwoman’s utility belt. Though Kate Kane wore a belt on her suit, Ryan’s suit looks to have much more in terms of utility. The extra pouches serve to make even more of the color red stand out. Equally, where Kate Kane had black gauntlets on her wrists, Ryan’s are, again, red. They also look a lot more weaponized; not only do they extend all the way to the elbow, but also combine into her gloves. The result will no doubt add even more power to her fists. The extension of the gauntlets will most likely serve as an extra defensive and offensive measure – potentially playing into Ryan’s “wildly undisciplined” style of fighting compared to Kate’s.

Another thing that’s unclear is whether Leslie’s Batwoman will have her natural hair when suited up or wear the traditional wig. If it is indeed the latter, then the wig looks set to be customized specifically for her. After all, in the artwork, it looks nowhere as straight in style as Kate’s did. Ryan Wilder coming from a less high profile background would mean less need to dramatically obscure things on that front.

There’s a good chance that Batwoman, like the other Arrowverse heroes, would have always received an updated suit in the new season. As it stands now, though, it will allow Leslie’s iteration to stand out and the new suit to emphasize a new Batwoman. Forming a new costume, possibly even from scratch, would also serve to further Luke Fox’s skills as Batwoman’s primary engineer. The full extent of similarities and differences will become all the clearer when filming begins and footage from Batwoman season 2 is released.
