How Breath Of The Wild 2 Could Be Setting Up An Age Of Calamity Villain

Theories postulate BOTW 2’s Ganondorf won’t be the only villain – if he’s the main villain at all. Age of Calamity’s Astor could play a role, too.

How Breath Of The Wild 2 Could Be Setting Up An Age Of Calamity Villain

Based on both its 2019 teaser and 2021 gameplay trailer, one The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 theory has gained prominence: The mummified corpse is Ganon. Not just any Ganon, either – it’s specifically the remains of Ganondorf from Twilight Princess. Even if this theory proves correct, there are still questions about how this long-dormant Ganon could suddenly awaken in BOTW 2, and the answers could center around Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity villain Astor.

Astor is the main, non-Ganon antagonist in Age of Calamity. He is a powerful sorcerer who allies with Harbinger Ganon, a defunct version of Terrako animated by Ganon’s Malice. Harbinger Ganon follows Terrako from the Breath of the Wild timeline into Age of Calamity’s, and Astor uses it to aid Calamity Ganon’s destruction of Hyrule. Astor is even able to distort and shape Malice. However, [SPOILERS] at the end of the game, Harbinger Ganon betrays him, consuming him in order to form the humanoid body of Calamity Ganon.

While Astor’s fate in Age of Calamity is sealed, that game is on a parallel timeline to Breath of the Wild. Astor should still exist in the Breath of the Wild timeline, though; he just wouldn’t have Harbinger Ganon to amplify his powers. But if the events of Breath of the Wild cleared a passage to a mummified, half-dead Ganondorf beneath Hyrule Castle, it’s possible he could appear to and ally with Astor. Ganondorf pulled a similar stunt to ally with Zant in Twilight Princess, so there’s already precedent for this. If that’s the case, perhaps Astor is the one who sets off the events of Breath of the Wild 2, coaxing Link and Zelda into the depths of Hyrule Castle.

Could Age Of Calamity’s Astor Appear In BOTW 2?

This hypothesis assumes two more things that aren’t proven yet: one, that Age of Calamity is canon, and two, that the Breath of the Wild sequel doesn’t take place on Age of Calamity’s timeline. Tantalizingly, BOTW 2’s true title is still secret because it would give away too much about the plot. While there could be plenty of reasons for this, one supposition is that it points towards an integration with Age of Calamity or its time travel mechanic.

At the very least, Age of Calamity reintroduced time travel to this era of the Zelda series. The franchise is no stranger to the concept – it’s famously prominent in Ocarina of Time – but the story device was absent in the Breath of the Wild era until it became the central plot conceit of Age of Calamity. BOTW 2’s new gameplay trailer now suggests some of Link’s powers will revolve around time manipulation, too.

If Breath of the Wild 2 utilizes time travel, it could mean further inclusion of Age of Calamity’s characters and mechanics. The knowledge of Astor’s evil antics in the Age of Calamity timeline makes his apparent absence in Breath of the Wild downright chilling, and his presence in the sequel could certainly fill in some holes. Mummy Ganon likely can’t resurrect himself, after all.
