How Character Customization Works In Pokémon BDSP

Character customization has been confirmed for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl during the August Pokémon Presents. The feature, which has become a popular staple of recent Pokémon titles, will allow players to change their outfits and hairstyles via “style” options. The inclusion is an exciting surprise, as it wasn’t available in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the last full remakes released after the customization feature was introduced during Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS.

In the early Pokémon games, the main playable character’s appearance was predetermined and remained non-customizable throughout the adventure. While this wasn’t an issue with the older graphics of previous titles, as the Pokémon series transitioned to 3D graphics and more detailed playable characters in the overworld, the lack of personalization made the experience less immersive. The introduction of clothing, hairstyles, and diverse skin tones in recent Pokémon games has allowed players to create characters they relate to.

Currently, it isn’t known if skin tones will be customizable in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as the teaser footage only shows the original Diamond and Pearl protagonists Lucas and Dawn. However, by purchasing “styles” at Metronome Style Shop in Veilstone City, players will be able to change their clothing and hair to fit certain looks. So far, this includes a “Winter” Style, “Eevee” style, and “Leather Jacket” style alongside the base outfits for either protagonist. It is likely additional styles will become available while progressing through the game’s storyline.

Pokémon BDSP Character Customization Could Be Used In Contests

While details on confirmed features are still limited, there is a possibility character customization may be utilized during the Pokémon Diamond & Pearl remake’s Super Contest Shows. Players may be able to purchase outfits specifically for the Contests, with certain styles giving a boost to scores. It is also possible all “styles” in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will have a contest trait attached to them, incentivizing players to dress ahead of time for the Pokémon Contest category they plan to enter. For example, the “Leather Jacket” style could give a boost in the “cool” and “tough” categories, as where the “Eevee” style could give a boost in the “cute” category.

Currently, it hasn’t been confirmed if hairstyles are tied specifically to certain outfits, or if players will have the ability to visit Salons similar to Sword and Shield or X and Y to change up hair color, hair cuts, and cosmetic details. However, it is likely salons will be absent from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as this would require additional buildings to be added to Sinnoh’s towns. From what has been seen in the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl trailers, the town layouts have remained largely the same from the original games, making the addition of numerous new shops unlikely. However, the ability to pick outfits for characters will be a great way for players to put their own personal spin on the main protagonist.
