Superpowers raise a lot of questions about the day-to-day lives of superheroes. After all, Hulk’s nigh-invincible purple pants had to be made out of unstable molecules to stop fans from wondering why they weren’t shredding to pieces every time Hulk changed. Wolverine’s healing factor raises a similar conundrum – how does the X-Man shave with a healing factor?

The most likely answer is that Logan’s legendary healing factor isn’t tied to his hair. While Wolverine can typically heal back from the most grievous of injuries, growing a really sick mullet is (arguably) less serious. This is because hair grows from the bottom of a follicle, from a root made up of protein cells. Unlike the cells of the body, hair and fingernails aren’t a living substance, so they probably aren’t directly affected by his mutant healing factor. Thus, Wolverine is able to treat himself to a haircut and manicure without any problems.

Of course, comic book history does throw up a few obstacles to the scientific explanation. Wolverine has been immolated or in some cases disintegrated down to a skeleton, but even his healing factor is so strong he recovers even after obviously fatal injuries – and always returns to his familiar mutton chops in short order. Still, science does have a few explanations for this. Hair growth occurs in several stages, so it’s possible grievous injuries can restart Wolverine’s anagen phase, where hair initially grows, with a vengeance. This could explain why Wolverine always returns to his wild signature look time and time again.

There are also a few non-scientific explanations for Wolverine’s extremely effective shaving habits. First off, being an X-Man means Logan has the perk of advanced – and occasionally alien – technology. Perhaps Beast simply whipped Logan up some sort of shaving solution that dulls his healing factor long enough to get a good shave in every day. Then again, it seems unlikely Logan would want anything capable of dulling his healing factor in excessive use every day. It’s also possible his inconsistent hair growth was simply a result of the experimentation conducted by Weapon X and numerous others over the years. That would explain Logan’s considerably more feral look pre-Wolverine.

Ultimately, the explanation is often up to the various creative teams undertaking the Wolverine mythos at any given time. Just how Wolverine succeeds in shaving is up to endless hours of fan debate, but one thing’s for sure – at least Wolverine doesn’t have to worry about razor burn.
