Harry Potter introduced the concept of horcruxes, and even though Lord Voldemort was the only one who managed to have more than one, Harry technically had one too, made without him even knowing and through a different process. The Wizarding World is full of interesting objects, places, spells, and more, and while many of these can come in handy on various occasions, there are others that are extremely dangerous, and some have some really obscure purposes. Among those are the horcruxes, a practice mostly used by Lord Voldemort on his quest to reach immortality and which created a lot of trouble for Harry and company.
The Harry Potter books and movies tell the story of “the boy who lived” and Lord Voldemort, the darkest wizard of all and who had some dangerous plans for both the wizarding and muggle worlds. Harry and Voldemort were enemies due to the latter failing to kill baby Harry thanks to the “protective shield” of his mother’s sacrifice, which in turn led to Voldemort losing his physical form. However, this wasn’t the end of Lord Voldemort as his spirit was kept alive through the many horcruxes he created years before he went after the Potters, and he fully returned years later with the help of Peter Pettigrew, one of his most loyal servants, and a potion that included Harry’s blood – and that’s where an important part of their story lies.
In order for Voldemort to regain a full, strong body and all his abilities, Peter Pettigrew helped him conduct a ritual with required “bone of the father, flesh of the servant, and blood of the enemy”, meaning that Voldemort, from his rebirth in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire until his death, had Harry’s blood in him. This not only kept Lily Potter’s sacrifice alive for longer, thus keeping Harry protected, but it also made Voldemort Harry’s unofficial “horcrux”, though whether it can be considered as such or not is still debated among fans due to the complicated process of creating a horcrux.
Creating a horcrux isn’t easy, and the full process hasn’t been revealed by J.K. Rowling as she has shared there’s a very “horrific act” involved that made her editor sick. What’s known about the process, however, is that it requires a murder (as this act fragments the soul) and the use of a spell to take that damaged portion of the soul and keep it in an object (or living being, though it’s better to use inanimate objects). The third step is the mysterious “horrific act”, and after that, a piece of that person’s soul is kept in the object, thus extending their life. Now, although Harry didn’t go through all that and his soul wasn’t fragmented, his blood on Voldemort’s body would have turned the dark lord into a horcrux as this kept Harry alive just like Harry himself, Marvolo Gaunt’s ring, Slytherin’s locket, and many others kept Voldemort alive for years.
Rowling has confirmed that this act serves as a sort of horcrux for Harry, but there are obviously some big differences between this and Voldemort’s horcruxes, not only in the process itself but in the purpose of each one, as Harry’s had a more positive connotation as it was all about Lily’s sacrifice and Harry’s protection. Whether Voldemort should be considered as Harry’s horcrux or not is up to every fan, but it’s a good parallel between those made by Voldemort out of ego and thirst for power and Harry’s which was made unwillingly and carried on with his mother’s protection.
