Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Masters of the Universe: Revelation season 1.

The first episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelation restores a classic bit of lore from the original Masters of the Universe storyline, revealing that He-Man’s Sword of Power was made up of two other blades. While the basic story of Masters of the Universe has remained consistent across multiple incarnations, the history has varied wildly between various toy lines, comic books, animated series and one live-action film. Miraculously, Masters of the Universe: Revelation attempts to reconcile many of these conflicting story elements while working them into the continuity of the 1983 animated series.

The first episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, “The Power of Grayskull,” opened in the same fashion as many episodes of the classic Masters of the Universe animated series, with the sorcerer Skeletor trying to infiltrate Castle Grayskull and acquire ultimate power from its secrets. Reaching the heart of the castle, Skeletor faced He-Man and tricked his archenemy into thrusting his Sword of Power through Skeletor and into a magical lock, revealing the Orb of Power which was the source of all the magic in Eternia. Unfortunately, Skeletor’s effort to claim this magic for himself by breaking the Orb of Power inadvertently doomed the universe. He-Man attempted to save the day by using his Sword of Power as a conduit to absorb the magic that threatened to unmake reality and return it to the primordial realms from which it had originally come. This resulted in the Sword of Power separating into two distinct blades and He-Man’s secret identity of Prince Adam of Eternos being revealed to all those who watched.

Beyond setting up the central quest of Masters of the Universe: Revelation season 1, where the Heroic Warriors and Evil Warriors of Eternia joined together to reforge the Sword of Power, this was also a nod to the original storyline for Masters of the Universe. The first Masters of the Universe action figure line was introduced in 1981 and many comics and children’s books based on the original concept were created before the 1983 animated series introduced a significantly different continuity and the idea of He-Man having a secret identity. Before that, Eternia was a post-apocalyptic magic world in decay and He-Man was a barbarian hero closer in temperament to Conan the Barbarian than Superman. In this setting, both He-Man and Skeletor wielded two blades that combined to form the Sword of Power, which acted as a key to the Jaw-Bridge of Castle Grayskull. This concept was never introduced into the classic animated series.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation developed this idea even further and drew upon other elements of the animated series and action figure lines which followed after the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toys and cartoon. The two blades making up the Sword of Power were revealed to be tied to the mystic realms of Preternia and Subternia, which were presented as the Heaven and Hell of the Eternian afterlife. Preternia was originally the setting of The Powers of Grayskull, an unproduced prequel of Masters of the Universe, set in a prehistoric Eternia, though it was later made canon by the 2009 Masters of the Universe Classics toy line. By contrast, Subternia was originally an underground kingdom, introduced in the 2002 Masters of the Universe reboot.

Given the variety of stories told within the Masters of the Universe line over four decades, it would be impossible for any series to reconcile all the different versions of Eternia. Masters of the Universe: Revelation largely adheres to the history of the first animated series, but is not entirely beholden to it. Indeed, it does a masterful job of introducing the elements of other continuities and honoring the whole of the Masters of the Universe mythology.
