One of the oldest Pokémon fan theories posits that Voltorb is actually a possessed Poké Ball. The mystery of the Ball Pokémon has only deepened since its Generation I debut, with Pokédex entries linking Voltorb and the creation of Poké Balls themselves. No concrete answers have been given as to exactly what Voltorb has to do with the creation of Poké Balls, but the introduction of the Hisuian Voltorb offers intriguing clues.

A regional variant that will be found in Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Hisui region, this new version of Voltorb is a Grass/Electric-type. Comparisons between Hisuian Voltorb’s new wooden look and Poké Balls of the time period are obvious, but what is more important is the presence of as-yet unidentified seeds within Hisuian Voltorb’s shell. Apparently, Hisuian Voltorb can sprout these seeds from a hole in its top. What these seeds are remains unknown, and the question then arises about what might actually be inside a Hisuian Voltorb’s shell.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set to explore an earlier time in the franchise’s history, and while there are still Poké Balls, they look different from those used in the modern era. Many players may recall Poké Ball maker Kurt from the second generation games, who created special balls in the tradition of his ancestors by using apricorns, a hard-shelled fruit that comes in different colors. Apricorns are the oldest known method of making Poké Balls, and craftsman like Kurt can hollowing them out to make different Poké Balls depending on the apricorn’s color.

It is important to note that apricorns, which are native to Johto, were not available in the Sinnoh region in Diamond and Pearl. They are not available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl either, except to those who received apricorn Poké Balls as preorder bonuses. Hisui is the early verison of Sinnoh, so it seems more likely that Hisuian Voltorb would carry a seed similar to apricorns rather than actual apricorn seeds.

The nature of Hisuian Voltorb and the apricorn’s connection to Poké Balls is too compelling to ignore. Beyond its appearance, Poké Balls have been linked directly to Voltorb since its Pokédex entry in Silver. Voltorb was said to have been present at the creation of Poké Balls, and Crystal would go on to say that Voltorb’s outer shell is not made from materials found in nature.

At this point, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to question if the seeds within Hisuian Voltorb can be used to make Poké Balls, or if Hisuian Voltorb’s shell was an inspiration in the design of Poké Balls. After all, to contain Hisuian Voltorb’s discharges of electricity when excited, people would plug the hole in its shell. Such an act is similar to a Poké Ball keeping a Pokémon stored inside. The relationship between Voltorb and Poké Balls remains mysterious, but with this new regional variant having similarities to Hisuian Poké Balls and those made with apricorns, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is teasing new lore and answers to decades-old mysteries.
