Lily Aldrin from How I Met Your Mother is an essential part of the iconic friend group: not only is she Marshall’s soulmate, she is also Robin’s only girlfriend, she gives Ted tough love when needed, and she even has a unique relationship with Barney despite all of his shortcomings. It’s easy to reduce Lily to being Marshall’s loving wife since they’re almost always together, but in reality, Lily is very much her own person with her own story to tell.

Because her sense of reality is warped, Lily often comes across as selfish and manipulative. She’s the culprit behind all of the messes she gets herself into. Some make for great plots, while others are completely unnecessary.

10 Best: Reconnecting With Her Father

One of the saddest things about Lily is that she grew up in a dysfunctional home. While her mother worked herself to death, her irresponsible father spent most of his time creating board games, hoping one would bring him success. He prioritized his dream over Lily, missing her recital and wasting the money they saved up for her braces.

It took Lily a long time and a few “you’re dead to me” looks to come around and welcome her father back into her life. He ended up having fun with Marshall’s mother, which was pretty upsetting both for them as well as for fans of the show.

9 Worst: Breaking Up With Marshall

Marshall and Lily got engaged in the pilot episode of How I Met Your Mother. Soon after, she worried that her relationship with Marshall was standing in the way of her becoming a successful painter and broke off the engagement.

Leaving Marshall to pursue her dream was one of the worst things that Lily did to Marshall. She could easily have done both since Marshall was nothing but supportive of her every step of the way.

8 Best: Lily – The Master Of Puppets

Lily has been meddling with Ted’s love life ever since they met. She came up with “the front porch test” to evaluate whether Ted’s girlfriend is someone she’d enjoy spending time with when they’re all older.

When Lily broke Ted and Karen up, it was revealed that she’s been pulling the strings for way longer than Ted thought. Even though her manipulation doesn’t reflect well on her, it made for one of the most interesting storylines. It’s a miracle that Ted decided to continue being friends with her after that since Lily’s behavior would never fly neither today nor in the past or future.

7 Worst: Lily’s Struggles With Shopping

In “Dowisetrepla”, Marshall found out that Lily was keeping a horrible secret from him: she has a massive credit card debt piled up and that’s the reason why she was pushing Marshall to take a well-paid but soul-crushing job at GNB.

Lily even contemplated divorcing Marshall at that point, to which Marshall said one of his best quotes: “When I married you, I married all your problems, too.” In this storyline, Lily turned out to be selfish and very unreliable.

6 Best: Lily Is Low-Key Bi-Curious

Lily and Robin shared many wholesome friendship moments, but deep down, Lily harbored feelings of physical attraction towards Robin. She often had dreams in which she’d kiss Robin and she always brought it up when she drank martinis while saying that “it’s stupid”.

Lily was just a teenager when she met Marshall, so she didn’t really get a chance to explore her sexuality. Luckily, Lily and Marshall managed to keep the spark alive in their relationship, so she didn’t struggle from fear of missing out.

5 Worst: Lily’s Own Catchphrase

While Barney’s numerous catchphrases caught on instantly and we loved hearing them over and over again, the same couldn’t be said of Lily’s “you son of a beech”. It came out of nowhere, it didn’t really make much sense, and it wasn’t clever at all.

When saying it to Marvin, she would say “yon son of a me”, which was slightly funnier, but still pretty much uncalled for.

4 Best: Lily’s Search For A Fulfilling Career

Everybody besides Lily knew what they wanted to do professionally and eventually got their dream jobs. Meanwhile, Lily was struggling. Even though she was a kindergarten teacher, that’s not really what she wanted to do.

In her heart, she wanted to be an artist. She struggled for quite a while before landing her dream job: becoming an art consultant.

3 Worst: Aldrin Justice

Lily worked in a kindergarten, so she often made parallels between the behaviors of children and adults. Aldrin Justice was a form of punishment that Lily used at work, but she started applying to adults as well. The idea is that she takes something the punished person cherishes away from them so as to make them repent.

Lily is pretty shameless considering that she is also no saint to people, even those closest to her. In “Aldrin Justice”, the episode from season 2, she almost got a bunch of people at Ted’s first in trouble just because she wanted to school Ted’s boss.

2 Best: Lily Becoming A Mother

Lily was always the mother of the friend group and she had a special relationship with each and every member of the group, even Barney.

She knew from the start that she will eventually have a family. Little Marvin was a great addition to the team, especially because his parents didn’t lose themselves in their newly assumed parental role, but rather incorporated their baby into their preexisting lifestyle.

1 Worst: Lily’s Unpredictable Temperament

Lily’s short temperament brought about several storylines that seriously tarnished her reputation. She beat up Jenkins after realizing she kissed Marshall without hearing the whole story first.

She acts very possessive of Marshall but doesn’t really value him all that much. After all, she considers herself the settler and Marshall the reacher, even though it’s clearly the other way around.
