Unlike traditional video games, the time investment in a VR game is a concern for a lot of players. Fatigue and nausea can occur during long VR sessions, not to mention neck pain from the weight of the headset. At the same time, gamers are more budget-conscious than ever when it comes to the games they chose to play. In the span of 4 weeks, players have the choice of getting Nioh 2, DOOM Eternal, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Half-Life: Alyx, Resident Evil 3, and Final Fantasy VII Remake. There’s simply no shortage of quality titles to play, and even with a mandatory quarantine, only so much time in a day to play them.
Before release, Half-Life: Alyx was said by Valve to be a “Full-length” VR game, as opposed to Valve’s first VR game, The Lab which is a series of mini-games. The exact length of the game was unknown, but it was expected to be as long as Half-Life 2.
There are 11 Chapters in Half-Life: Alyx, each averaging just over an hour to complete. The game should take roughly 15 hours to play through, making it just an hour longer than the average length of Half-Life 2.
Alyx uses every minute of its runtime efficiently and effectively. The chapters help to break up the game into digestible sections so players can more easily take breaks and prevent motion-sickness and fatigue. 15 hours doesn’t seem like a lot compared to the likes of Animal Crossing and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but this is really a case of quality of quantity. Half-Life: Alyx is worth every penny.
