Few studios handle video game length half as well as Nintendo. Between Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Fire Emblem, Nintendo games know how to encourage replayability – both through lengthy campaigns that know when to end and a healthy amount of side content. Skyward Sword is one of the longest entries in the Zelda franchise, and not always for the best reasons unfortunately.

The original Skyward Sword is an excellent game, but it took some time before opening up and was in need of improvements from day one. Skyward Sword HD is arguably the best Zelda re-release yet, padded with quality of life features that radically change the game’s final playtime for the better.

How Long Is Skyward Sword On Wii?

Playing through Skyward Sword on the Nintendo Wii takes some time and patience. The opening prologue takes a whole hour before you’re given any semblance of true control and, even then, you’re fairly limited in what you can do or where you can go. It isn’t until past the 5 hour mark where Skyward Sword opens up.

Fi interrupts gameplay enough times to add a sizable amount of minutes to the final playtime and you’re generally directed in such a way where you have no choice but to take things slowly. The Wii’s motion controls – while well implemented – also take some serious getting used to and most players will need a few extra hours just to get a feel for the mechanics. Getting through Skyward Sword’s story on original hardware can take anywhere from 35 to 45 hours. Aiming for a complete playthrough or just going for every Heart Container will push you to around 60 hours.

Zelda remakes often go out of their way to include a few quality of life features, but these often have a bad habit of changing the core design. Skyward Sword HD miraculously gets out the other side of its remake completely unscatched. If anything, this is the best Zelda remaster yet with Skyward Sword HD changing its source material for the better.

The opening tutorial has been made completely optional. Fi no longer interrupts you and must now be triggered manually like Navi or Tatl. The Joy-Con and Pro controls help gameplay move at a faster pace which pairs well with the faster text crawl. Rounding out the experience, Skyward Sword HD runs at 60 frames per second and even includes fast travel via an Amiibo. All these changes reduce the main story’s playtime down to 30 to 35 hours and the post-game to 40 to 50 hours.
