Dave Bautista is now an in-demand Hollywood actor, but before that he wrestled as Batista in WWE, giving the Batista Bomb to anyone in his path. Bautista got into wrestling later in life than most, not entering WWE’s developmental system until his early-30s. Equipped with a Herculean physique and an imposing voice, though, Bautista got the call up to WWE programming in 2002. While his first gimmick, that of “Deacon” to D-Von Dudley’s “Reverend,” didn’t go well, Bautista was retooled quickly and placed in the Evolution stable.

Working alongside veterans Triple H and Ric Flair, as well as fellow up-and-comer Randy Orton, proved highly beneficial to Bautista, and before long he was winning titles and gaining fans. After a famously well done slow burn story arc, Bautista eventually turned on Evolution, going on to win the World Heavyweight Championship from Triple H at 2005’s WrestleMania 21. Bautista would remain a top of the card performer for the remainder of his time as a WWE regular, which ended in mid-2010.

Following his departure from WWE, Bautista spent a few years making in-roads in the world of acting, finally getting his big break with the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. Since then he’s appeared in several other high-profile films, and will soon be part of the star-studded cast of Dune. Still, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, he hasn’t kept a wall between his movie career and WWE.

Dave Bautista, again wrestling under simply Batista, made his first return to WWE in January 2014, and came back in a big way. He won the Royal Rumble, and ended up facing both former Evolution teammate Randy Orton and fan-favorite Daniel Bryan in the WrestleMania main event for the WWE Championship. Bryan ultimately forced Batista to tap out to his Yes Lock submission hold, cementing him as a top star in the league of Batista and Orton. Evolution then re-formed for a few months, going to war with the dominant Shield faction of Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins, before Bautista went back to Hollywood.

Bautista’s most recent WWE return, and possibly his last ever, came near the end of 2018, with Batista entering into a feud with former mentor and real-life close friend Triple H that led to a match at WrestleMania 35 in April 2019. Batista and HHH engaged in a no-holds-barred brawl, with Batista declaring it would be his retirement match, but that his opponent would also have to retire if beaten. Unsurprisingly, Triple H won, giving Batista the WrestleMania sendoff that Dave Bautista the man wanted for his wrestling character. Bautista is now officially retired from WWE, although he was originally scheduled to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in April 2020, before the pandemic made that impossible. He’s now slated to be inducted at a future ceremony.
