Even though the Need for Speed franchise has fallen in terms of popularity over the years, EA is still working to bring the series back to life with the recent announcement of a new installment. The Need for Speed games were first introduced back in 1994 as Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed, and the franchise held its own as some of the best racing games available until a new title, Forza Motorsport, was created in 2005 by Turn 10 Studios.
Need for Speed introduced players to a unique style in the racing genre, with the main premise always including racing against others to unlock cars and specific parts for car customization. The series has spawned a whopping 24 games since its initial release in the early 1990s and has garnered an impressive following. The games initially involved expensive sports cars racing on a point-to-point track, but when Need for Speed: Underground was released, it pivoted the franchise to the underground import car scene that is still prevalent in the franchise today. While various developers have taken on the role of creating the many games in the Need for Speed franchise, in February of 2020 EA announced that Criterion would be the sole developer of the series moving forward. Recently, however, some of the newest Need for Speed games have fallen flat, giving fans little hope for the racing series’ future.
With a new racing game on the market, Need for Speed was looking at some fierce competition. The Forza franchise also sports an impressive list of entries, with just over ten games and one spin-off. Forza’s installments include hundreds of cars and many real-world international (and some fictional) tracks for players to race on. Both franchises have their clear similarities and differences, with one of the most outstanding differences being how each developer has handled their respective games’ newer entries. Need for Speed has garnered some flack on its recent releases, with Metacritic calling the Need for Speed reboot in 2015 one of the worst game reboots of the 2010s. The most recent entry, Need for Speed Heat in 2019, was generally ruled as just mediocre, but it clearly wasn’t a solid game that could stand with the franchises legacy.
Forza, however, has had a reputation of getting great sequels, with Forza Horizon 4 getting praised as one of the “best open world racing games in many, many years.” Although it remains one of EA’s most profitable franchises, Need for Speed has seen an obvious decline in quality over the years. This is not the first series that EA has seen such a decline with, and fans have argued that other popular EA games like Mass Effect have also suffered under the company. With some of the more recent Need for Speed titles needing repeated updates to fix in-game issues, EA will need to branch out from its normal formula in order to win back players who have moved to Forza.
Witch clear hopes of reigniting the Need for Speed franchise, EA’s recent announcement of a new entry hopefully means they have taken the fan’s criticisms to heart, and will create a new NFS title that can stand up against its predecessors. The latest update to Need For Speed Heat has fixed problems that plagued the game for a while, as well as added in cross play functions, and players can now have a smoother experience inside the game than ever before. Even with the legacy of Need for Speed, Forza seems to have driven to first place thanks to their consistent quality racing, and EA really needs to step it up with the next entry in order to gain fans of the series back, or else they may get left behind at the pit stop.
