How NieR Replicant Will Be Different From The Original

The history leading up to NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is nearly as weird as its name. The game is a remaster of NieR Replicant, which released only in Japan in 2010 on PlayStation 3 consoles. It was an alternate version of NieR Gestalt, a cult-classic JRPG that released in the West as simply NieR. Now that a remastered version of NieR Replicant is finally releasing internationally, though, there are plenty of changes that both longtime fans and newcomers should be excited about.

The differences between NieR Replicant the NieR Gestalt primarily focused on its characters, with different protagonists who react differently to the world and people around them. In Replicant, for instance, the protagonist is a young man and Yonah is his sister. In Gestalt (and the version most Westerners played as NieR), the protagonist is in his forties and Yonah is his daughter.

Now, for the first time ever, NieR Replicant is headed for a worldwide release, with its remaster releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One later this year. Those who played NieR in 2010 will notice some character and story changes when playing NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, but the newest version of the game also has some noticeable changes from the original, Japan-only Replicant.

How The NieR Replicant Remaster Is Different

The newest version of NieR Replicant will obviously have updated and improved graphics. However, there’s a lot more changes coming to the remaster than just looks. Combat is also being reworked to better mimic the kind found in NieR: Automata. This is done to please players who started with Automata and will be expecting similar gameplay in Replicant. Considering how well NieR: Automata sold, it makes sense that developers would want to recapture some of that success by imitating the improved combat and mechanics found there.

The original voice actors are also returning to re-record lines, and new dialogue has been added as well. This has led to speculation that new scenes – and perhaps even new endings – are going to be added into NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… For now, though, nothing official has been confirmed, despite trailers revealing NieR Replicant gameplay footage, concept art, and more. Although, much like the combat, developers may rework the story and endings to better fit a style players of NieR: Automata are looking for.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is set to release on April 23rd, 2021. It’s joining the list of highly-anticipated RPGs coming out this year. And while NieR fans are likely excited to see an alternate version of the first game, the newest version of NieR Replicant is more than just a remaster. It will have changes to combat, gameplay, characters, and possibly even story as well.
