Warning: SPOILERS for Netflix’s Nightbooks.

Netflix’s Nightbooks uses its ending to set up a sequel featuring the return of the witch Natacha (Krysten Ritter). The children’s horror movie is based on a book of the same name by J.A. White, which follows the story of a scary story-obsessed child named Alex (Winslow Fegley). He is forced to write scary stories to Ritter’s evil witch to avoid being killed after falling for her trap. Alex is aided by another trapped kid, Yasmin (Lidya Jewett), to develop the stories and plot a scheme to escape Natacha’s clutches.

After Alex and Yasmin devise a plan to escape Natacha’s enchanted apartment, they are surprised to learn that she was a step ahead of them already. Their attempt to leave only leads them to a house made of candy in the middle of the woods ripped straight out of “Hansel and Gretel.” They learn that Natacha was kidnapped by the original evil witch years ago and is siphoning off her magic to give them to herself. The original witch feeds off the scary stories Alex tells, but he breaks her out of her coffin by telling one with a happy ending. This leads to her destroying the house and killing Natacha in the process, although Alex and Yasmin manage to finally escape after burning the witch in a furnace. They go on to reunite with their families and give Nightbooks a happy ending, or at least that’s how it seems at first.

Alex and Yasmin’s continued friendship in the real world isn’t the scene Nightbooks leaves viewers with. Netflix’s kids’ horror movie instead returns to the witch’s apartment to show the toy statues of kids who used to be captured there. One starts to move as the camera zooms out and shows Natacha’s hand slam on the floor as her evil cackle plays over the start of Nightbooks’ credits. This confirms that Natacha is alive and managed to survive her fight with the original witch. With only a tease of Natacha’s return, viewers will be left to wonder what state Krysten Ritter’s character would be in if a Nightbooks sequel were to happen. She is not magic in nature and only has her powers if she keeps spraying herself with the original witch’s mist. This might mean Natacha is no longer powered by magic or that she only has a limited supply of her powers left.

Now that Natacha is confirmed to be alive, that is a not-so-subtle way of confirming Nightbooks 2 would see Krysten Ritter return as the witch. The question that this tease will leave viewers with is who exactly she’ll encounter next. The decision to show the kid statues starting to move implies that they could come to life. This might be the result of the original witch dying and Natacha not being as powerful as she once was. It will be up to a Nightbooks sequel to reveal what that would mean for these kids, as they could remain trapped in their toy-like forms or return to their normal human bodies.

Although Nightbooks’ ending sets up Natacha to return in a sequel, the futures of Alex and Yasmin are much more unclear. Their stories are seemingly concluded for now, as they have both escaped from Natacha and have no reason to return. That could change, of course, if they were to learn that she is alive and kidnapping other kids. However, there is also a strong chance that Nightbooks 2 could focus on a new kid or multiple kids who have to deal with Natacha. Since no sequel for the Netflix 2021 movie has been announced yet, and White never wrote a follow-up book, the next chapter of Natacha’s story and the Nightbooks franchise could go in any direction.
