How Pokémon GO Trainers Can Become InGame Characters

Since the release of the very first Pokémon game, people everywhere have wished to be part of the world. Although that’s not likely to happen, Pokémon GO players have a unique opportunity that just might be the next best thing. During an upcoming event, trainers can enter to become fully-fledged NPCs — at least, for a time.

In February’s Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto event, featured trainers will appear on the map for battling. This feature will be available for all players, whether they purchased a ticket for the event or not. Additionally, special Timed Research tasks will reward players for battling the NPC trainers.

To become a featured trainer, Pokémon GO players only need to enter a contest via social media. To determine which trainers will be in-game NPCs during the event, Niantic is asking players to post a tweet with a screenshot of their trainer profile (which must include their trainer name and avatar outfit), a list of three Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region that would comprise their team (not including Ditto or any Legendary/Mythical Pokémon), and the hashtag #PokemonGOTourContest.

Entries are due by 11:59 p.m. PST (GMT-8) on Monday, Jan. 11. The full contest rules can be read here, but the main info players need to know is that entries will be judged based on the creativity of their avatar outfit, the general theme for their trainer, and Pokémon team composition.

This gives players the chance to really get creative with their trainers in order to stand out. Perhaps an all red outfit could be paired with a team of fire-type Pokémon, or a mysterious-looking trainer could focus on ghost-types. Alternately, players could show off their pride for Team Instinct, Mystic, or Valor. The possibilities are basically endless.

Presumably, these player inspired NPC trainers will only be in-game during the Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto event. However, this does open the door for more events that feature players as actual, in-game NPCs. Plus, the structure creates the possibility for other NPC map encounters, like Team Rocket Grunts or Team Leaders.

Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto takes place Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time. The event celebrates both the 25th anniversary of Pokémon and the fifth anniversary of Pokémon GO.
