Players of Pokémon Sword and Shield got an exciting look at the games’ highly anticipated link-up with Pokémon GO this week. Information about the potential ability to transfer Pokémon between Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sword and Shield has been circulating since early this year, as more content has been added to the Pokémon transfer app, Pokémon Home. The confirmation that players will be able to bring certain Pokémon over from Pokémon GO has many hardcore players excited to bring their collections forward into the ever-expanding Galar region. The question remains: How will these transfers work?
There will be certain limitations on what Pokémon will be transferable, including event Legendaries and Pokémon that are not yet in the Galar Pokédex. It also appears players can only transfer from Pokémon GO to Pokémon Sword and Shield – not the other way around. Once a Pokémon has been brought forward, it can’t be brought back for use with Pokémon GO. With this in mind, players will have to decide how to keep their teams strong for battling in Pokémon GO Community Events, while also adding to their teams for Sword & Shield’s new DLC. Once players know which Pokémon they want to transfer, however, they will have to contend with a cooldown period, which can be shortened with the use of PokéCoins, though the amount needed is not yet known.
To offset some of these limitations, some perks are coming with the new Crown Tundra DLC update. Anyone who uses the transfer system will get a Meltan in Pokémon GO and a Meltmetal capable of Gigantamaxing in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The G-Max Melmetal will be the only one of its kind and a powerful addition to players’ teams. Melmetal will also have a unique G-Max ability called Max Meltdown. With these rare Pokémon as incentives, the interest to invest in Pokémon Home has likely hit a new peak.
While players are waiting for more clarification on the process, though, the use of PokéCoins to aid in transfers appears to be a controversial setback. Many players are younger, and the cost of PokéCoins for could pose a large issue. With Pokémon Home already charging a premium membership to use all its available features, this additional cost could reduce the number of players able to connect Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sword and Shield. The cost could add up for players who hope to transfer lots of Pokémon to the Galar region, and it could prevent younger players who can’t buy or easily earn the needed PokéCoins from using the transfer system at all.
Players will be able to access the transfer system before the year is over. Having the opportunity to connect Pokémon GO with Pokémon Sword and Shield could eventually offer plenty of new opportunities for the two games to work together. Whether it’s shared events between the two games or bonuses like Melmetal and Meltan, Pokémon could begin to offer many more options to fans around the world.
