The Flash movie has revealed the first look at the Supergirl costume that Sasha Calle will wear in the upcoming film, which is both similar and different to past Kryptonian suits. Barry Allen’s upcoming feature film will be a significant chapter for the DCEU since it will explore the Multiverse. Not only is Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman, but Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight is also joining the film from Earth-89. However, a character many were probably not expecting to see in The Flash is Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl.

Early in 2021, The Flash director Andy Muschietti announced that Calle would be the next actress to bring Supergirl to life, starting in his DCEU project. While that will be Calle’s first appearance, there are already reports that Warner Bros. is developing a Supergirl movie, ideally for a 2022-2023 release. As filming has gotten further along, Muschietti has been sharing cryptic images on social media as part of The Flash’s marketing, including a look at Keaton’s Batman suit. There has been a lot of speculation since Calle’s casting happened on how Supergirl will be presented, especially given her being Superman’s cousin.

After several months of waiting, Muschietti officially unveiled the first look at Calle’s Supergirl suit. Despite not revealing the entire thing and only the chest area of Supergirl’s costume, it does tell a few key aspects of what the DCEU is doing with Calle’s Supergirl. A full body shot will more than likely come out later in the year, perhaps either through a still image or maybe in The Flash’s first teaser trailer.

How Supergirl’s DCEU Costume Compares To Other Live-Action Versions

Calle will be the latest actor to portray Supergirl outside the comics, as there have been other DC properties to feature the Kryptonian heroine. Whether it be on the big or small screen, most versions of Supergirl have maintained the more classic look until recent years. Looking at Helen Slater’s suit from the 1984 Supergirl movie, it was as accurate it could possibly get. Smallville’s Kara Kent, played by Laura Vandervoort, didn’t get a costume until her return in the tenth and final season. Since Clark Kent hadn’t become Superman yet, they didn’t give her a cape nor the S-shield on her chest. Kara did, however, in the Smallville season 11 comic, get a brand new look that stood apart from Superman.

Rather than sporting a cape, Smallville’s Supergirl wore a very cape-like coat to match the look for the 31st century. Melissa Benoist’s incarnation of Kara on Supergirl, as part of the Arrowverse, is where her traditional look began to evolve further. Supergirl season 5 introduced a whole new look for Kara as the costume department designed a bodysuit, which allowed them to get rid of the skirt. Borrowing from Tyler Hoechlin’s original Superman suit, they added golden clasps for Kara’s new cape. DCEU’s Supergirl suit is the first time they have made the upper chest/shoulder area red. It would make sense if Calle’s cape is infused with the red chest/shoulder part, rather than a traditional cape.

Which Comics Supergirl’s Costume Is Based On (& How It Compares)

Like many comic book characters, Supergirl has been reimagined multiple times over the decades. Whether it’s reimagining Kara’s backstory or overall continuity, her Supergirl costume has been revamped almost every time they have rebooted the character. When Calle revealed her new haircut through social media, many comic readers speculated that the DCEU’s Supergirl was based on Cir-El, an alternative take on her. Instead, The Flash movie is going for something more traditional while putting their own spin on it. Even though it stands out from other live-action Supergirls, the DCEU design pulls from a very familiar iteration in the comics.

In the Injustice franchise, a character named Lara Lane-Kent is introduced as Superman and Lois Lane’s daughter through a What If storyline. Lara was the kid that Superman never had since she died while Joker murdered Lois when she was pregnant. Readers are introduced to Lara as part of Superman’s dreams, where he got to see what life would have been if Lois hadn’t died. Not only does Calle’s haircut resemble Lara’s hairdo, but the upper part of the DCEU costume heavily resembles what she wore in the Injustice comics. Lara’s costume has an extended throat line with yellow lines, which Muschetti’s image seems to tease for Calle’s suit too.

What Supergirl’s Suit Reveals About The DCEU Character & Flash Movie

The biggest component to Calle’s Supergirl suit is that The Flash uses Zack Snyder’s House of El symbol, which was introduced in Man of Steel. Despite Kara and Clark’s history as cousins in the comics, the DCEU has been vague about Supergirl’s cinematic existence after the Man of Steel prequel comic. In addition to that, it hasn’t gotten clearer what Kara’s DCEU status is after Calle’s casting. So far, Henry Cavill’s Superman is not officially scheduled to appear in The Flash movie, unless they are keeping it under wrap. Her casting made many think that perhaps, like Keaton’s Batman, this Supergirl comes from a different Earth in the Multiverse.

Calle’s Kara having the same House of El symbol doesn’t necessarily remove the possibility of her coming from an alternative reality. However, the fact Calle’s Supergirl costume has the same S-design heavily suggests that perhaps this Kara is from the same Earth as Cavill’s Kal-El. Looking closely at Calle’s costume material, it looks to be made from the same fabric used for Cavill’s suit, making it look very armor-like. Just like Clark’s crest, Supergirl’s S-shield has Kryptonese writing on it. That was part of Snyder’s take on Kryptonian culture in how they made uniforms. What the Kryptonian script actually says on Supergirl’s crest is unclear for the time being.

There is definitely a reason why they are going with Snyder’s Kryptonian design, especially given that Supergirl will be a regular DCEU character after The Flash. If Calle’s Supergirl ends up being related to Cavill’s Superman, then it makes perfect sense why this design was made for her. They may share the exact same House of El glyph, but their respective costumes still end up being unique from each other.
