How to Beat and Counter Virizion in Pokemon GO

Pokemon GO trainers are looking to end the year on a high note with yet another legendary being added to endgame raid content. Since September, Niantic has been steadily introducing Pokemon from the Unova region into the game. With the subsequent releases of Cobalion and Terrakion into five star raid battles, the Grassland Pokemon Virizion now joins the fray as well until January 4th at 1 pm PST. But in order to enter the raid, trainers will need to team up with at least one other person to challenge the legendary.

Virizion originally debuted in Generation 5 as a Unova region native. As a member of the Swords of Justice, Virizion draws inspiration from the Three Musketeers, particularly the character Aramis who was known for having a vain and romantic nature. In-game, Virizion is a Grass/Fighting-type sharing the latter typing with other members of the group. In addition, the Swords of Justice also have access to duel-related moves such as Close Combat and Leaf Blade in Virizion’s case. As a result, Virizion has its own strengths but also weaknesses that trainers can use to take it down.

Beating Virizion

Because of its Grass and Fighting dual-typing, Virizion is weak to fairy, fire, flying, ice, poison, and psychic-type moves. Note that since flying moves are super effective against both types, they will inflict four times the normal damage on the Grassland Pokemon. As a result, Pokemon GO trainers should start with off with one of their Pokemon that knows moves like Wing Attack or Aerial Ace. At the same time, flying-type Pokemon are the best defense since Virizion will have to spend more time to take them out, allowing trainers to whittle down the legendary as much as possible. With this in mind, the best counters to Virizion will be part flying-type such as Moltres and Rayquaza or Pokemon like Honchkrow and Unfezant for trainers on a budget.

Alternative Counters

On the other hand, trainers might not have access to a strong flying-type Pokemon or flying-type moves that can take on Virizion. In that case, they can go with an alternative that is effective against either Grass or Fighting-type like Chandelure and the iconic Mewtwo. But trainers should be aware that they will only be inflicting twice the normal damage, meaning the battle will last longer and plan accordingly.

In the end, Virizion isn’t a particularly difficult raid battle and might be the easiest of the Swords of Justice to date. However, the raid is still good practice and trainers can finally reunite the members of the group in-game.
