How to Beat Mewtwo in Pokemon Sword and Shield Max Raid Battles

Game Freak has been on a roll with the latest Pokemon Sword and Shield updates meant to entertain trainers until the first DLC pass arrives in June. As part of the latest update, trainers can now face off against the Psychic-type legendary Pokemon, Mewtwo.

As the last Pokemon that could be caught normally in Generation 1’s post-game, Mewtwo is one of the most iconic faces to come out of the Kanto region. Its popular status would lead to starring in several Pokemon movies, cameo anime appearances, and showing up in additional games as a endgame challenge. Once again, Mewtwo reappears to fight trainers in a Max Raid Battle that befits its title as “the strongest Pokemon ever.”

Finding Mewtwo

With the most recent update, trainers can find Mewtwo in Max Raid Battles from February 27th to March 1st. Note that Mewtwo is only found in 5-star raids and will only be encountered 10-percent of the time. Furthermore, trainers should be aware that the legendary Pokemon cannot be caught in battle unlike previous Pokemon.

Fighting Mewtwo

Coming in at level 100, Mewtwo is much stronger than the Max Raids that have previously been thrown at trainers. On top of having moves such as Fire Punch and Focus Blast to counter its usual weaknesses, Mewtwo has six moves that rival the strongest attacks which can be learned instead of the usual four. Adding onto those problems, one of those moves is a stat-boosting move such as Nasty Plot or Bulk Up. Finally, the periodic barriers that Mewtwo puts up occasionally will take more damage to break through while inhibiting status effects like paralysis as usual.

Beating Mewtwo

Although it is a daunting task, emerging victorious over Mewtwo is possible. Since this is the first Max Raid Battle trainers won’t be able to overcome with sheer levels and stats, it is advised to party up with three other Pokemon Sword or Shield trainers instead of NPCS. Depending on Mewtwo’s moveset, bringing a Pokemon with Reflect and Light Screen goes a long way to mitigating Mewtwo’s damage to the party. Because trainers only have four faints shared between the group, it is more important to sustain through the onslaught and whittle down Mewtwo’s health rather than all-in the legendary Pokemon too soon. Because Mewtwo’s stat-boosting moves will eventually cause it to one-shot Pokemon, moves that can reset stats like Haze or Clear Smog are recommended. Alternatively, using Taunt on Mewtwo is another way to prevent it from increasing its stats.

If trainers succeed in defeating Mewtwo, they will be rewarded with a variety of items including EXP candy, Dynamax candy, EV-decreasing berries, and Hyper Training bottle caps.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
