How To Break Rocks In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

As players progress through Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, they will occasionally need to break cracked rocks that block their path. Players will need to obtain a special move in order to break the rocks and continue their exploration of the Sinnoh region. Once unlocked, players can use the special move directly from their Poketch to clear the rocks and continue on their way.

The player will encounter cracked rocks as obstacles as they make their way from Route 203 through the Oreburgh Gate and into the cave dungeon. To break these rocks, players will need to obtain the move Rock Smash, which can be used both in Pokémon battles and in the overworld to break rocks. In addition to teaching Rock Smash to a Pokémon in their party, players can use Rock Smash directly from their Poketch. The Poketch has replaced HMs in overworld but TMs are still available to teach to Pokémon.

As players enter the cave through Oreburgh Gate, they will notice a hiker wearing coveralls and a hat with an orange feather standing at the cave’s entrance. Once the player interacts with the hiker, he will give them TM98, which contains the move Rock Smash. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, the hiker will only gift the player Rock Smash if they have already visited Jubilife City and earned the Poketch item by finding all three clowns in the city and solving their riddles.

How To Use Rock Smash In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Once the hiker near the Oreburgh Gate has gifted the player the Rock Smash TM, he will also update their Poketch item with the Hidden Moves app. This app allows the player to learn all Hidden Moves, such as Fly, Surf, and Cut, without using the TM and teaching it to a Pokémon in their party. Instead, players can use the app to summon a wild Pokémon to perform the move and progress through the overworld in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Players will not be able to use Rock Smash in the overworld from their Poketch using the app until they have defeated the gym leader Roark in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s Oreburgh City and earned the Coal Badge. Keep in mind, Roark is not located in the Oreburgh City gym, but can be found in the mines to the south of the gym.

If the player has not unlocked the ability to use the Hidden Moves app from their Poketch, they can still teach the TM Rock Smash to a Pokémon in their party. Players should choose the Pokémon carefully as TMs, like Rock Smash, can only be taught once. If a player checks their inventory and selects the Poketch to find the move Rock Smash greyed out, it indicates they are unable to use the move in the overworld as they have not earned the necessary gym badge.

Once a player has had their Poketech updated to use the Hidden Moves app, the player can now approach the cracked rocks in their way and press A. An animation of a large fist will appear and clear a path for the player. Rock Smash can also be used during Pokémon battles. It is a Fighting-type move that deals 40 damage to an opponent with 100 accuracy. Rock Smash has a PP of 15 and has a chance to lower the target’s Defense stat.
