Here’s a guide to building a vault in 2015 sequel Fallout 4. Classic RPG series Fallout began back in 1997 and is set in a post-apocalyptic America rendered a barren wasteland following a nuclear war centuries earlier. The franchise sees gamers play as a survivor of the titular fallout who must leave the safety of their underground shelters – known as vaults – and venture into the wasteland to complete a series of quests while fighting off raiders, mutants, robots and the like.

Bethesda took over the Fallout franchise from Interplay Entertainment in 2008, with 2015’s Fallout 4 being the eighth overall entry including spinoff titles like Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel and Fallout: New Vegas. The game sees players control a character known as the Sole Survivor who is awoken from a cryogenic sleep in a vault located outside Boston, Massachusetts only to see their spouse murdered and their son kidnapped. After being re-frozen, the Sole Survivor reawakens some 60 years later and leaves the vault vowing to avenge their partner’s death and find their son.

Fallout 4 also offers players the ability to build their very own vault, but the game’s Vault-Tec Workshop DLC is required to do so. There are two ways to trigger the Vault-Tec Workshop – either by travelling to Quincy Quarries or by reaching level 20, which sets off a distress signal leading the Sole Survivor to Vault 88. Reaching level 20 is recommended, however, as players will come up against some formidable enemies in the process of accessing and building Vault 88 and a higher level means the Sole Survivor stands a better chance of defeating them.

Once inside Vault 88, the Sole Survivor will meet its overseer-turned-ghoul Valery Barstow who enlists their help constructing the half-finished vault. From there, players can complete a series of quests and customize Vault 88 to their liking. With Fallout 4’s Vault-Tec Workshop DLC players can add hallways, atriums, stairs and bridges while sprucing up the vault with furniture and decorations like Vault Boy and Vault Girl statues. They can also experience what it’s like to be an overseer by experimenting on Vault 88’s settlers.

Soon, fans of Fallout 4 will be able to experience the franchise via a whole new medium too. Amazon Studios recently announced plans to make a TV show based on the franchise with the help of Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. While firm details are scarce, Fallout fans have been clamoring for a live-action adaptation for years and the addition of the talented team behind Westworld certainly bodes well for Amazon’s Fallout TV show.
