How to Catch Lugia in Pokémon GO (Weaknesses & Counters)

Lugia, the legendary guardian of the seas from the Johto region, makes a return to Pokémon GO. At long last, players can add this Psychic- and Flying-type Pokémon to their Pokédex, alongside its famed counterpart Ho-oh.

It will not be easy to get Lugia in Pokémon GO, though, because it does not appear in the wild. Like other legendary Pokémon, it only appears in five-star raids. These are the most difficult raids, so players will need to bring their best Pokémon and tactics to the fight, along with lots of allies.

Five-star raids cannot be done solo, so players will need to team up with others to take Lugia down. Depending on where a player lives, it can be difficult to find others, but there are many Pokémon GO groups on Facebook, Discord, and other social media platforms. These should allow players to coordinate to be in the same place at the same time for the raid, or complete the raid via Remote Raid Passes.

The Best Pokémon to Face Lugia in Pokémon GO

Lugia has some significant weaknesses. Ghost- and Dark-type Pokémon are super effective against Lugia’s Psychic-type. Rock-, Electric-, and Ice-type Pokémon are all super effective against flying, so adding any of these Pokémon to the team should make it easier to catch Lugia. However, there are some specific Pokémon that players will want to look out for, as they stand a better chance of doing damage to Lugia, or even negating some of its damage.

The first Pokémon to examine is Tyranitar. It is both Rock-type and Dark-type, and it’s good to start the battle with this Pokémon. Players can get Tyranitar by capturing a Larvitar, then evolving it into a Pupitar for 25 candy, and then a Tyranitar for 100 candy. As it is a Dark-type, it will take less damage from Lugia’s psychic attacks. Other good Dark-types to consider are Houndoom, Absol, or Darkrai.

For an electric-type, Zapdos is a great option. It is a legendary Pokémon itself, however, so it may be difficult to find and catch. If Zapdos is not an option, Raikou is also worthy, as well as Zekrom. For a non-legendary Pokémon, players could try Electivire. It evolves from an Elekid and Electabuzz. To become an Electivire, it will need a Sinnoh Stone as well as the 100 candy.

Ghost-types are an effective counter against Lugia. Gengar is one of the most famous Ghost-type Pokémon and a great addition to the team going after Lugia. It’s also easy to catch a Gastly after dark, which evolves into a Haunter and then a Gengar.

Players could also bring Ground- and Rock-type Pokémon Rhyperior. A Rhyhorn evolves into a Rhydon and then a Rhyperior. Like the Electivire, players will need a Sinnoh Stone to evolve it. Another Pokémon requiring a Sinnoh Stone to evolve is the Mamoswine. It begins life as a Swinub, evolves into a Piloswine, then finally a Mamoswine. As it is ice and ground-type, Lugia is weak to its ice attacks.
