How to Find (& Catch) Magby in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl

Players can obtain Magby using different methods in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Since Magby is a version exclusive Pokémon, players with Brilliant Diamond will need to trade with a Shining Pearl owner; there are easy ways to find a trade for this Pokémon by using its Pokédex number. Those that own Shining Pearl can find Magby in specific Pokémon Hideaways in the Grand Underground.

Pokémon Hideaways are large areas in the Grand Underground where Pokémon can be seen roaming around. Instead of random encounters, players can choose which Pokémon to go after. However, running in a Pokémon’s line of sight will also cause that Pokémon to run after the player and attempt to engage them in battle. Magby is one of the various Pokémon that can only be found in specific Pokémon Hideaways.

Magby is a fire-type Pokémon and the first in the evolution line for Magmar and Magmortar. Since it only spawns in Shining Pearl’s Grand Underground, players can use either a Quick Ball or Dusk Ball to have a higher chance of catching it. The Quick Ball will need to be used as soon as the encounter starts to have the highest chance of catching the Pokémon. Dusk Balls can be used at any time because they increase the chance of capture for Pokémon in a cave regardless of when they’re used. Magby can be caught in Shining Pearl or traded for in Brilliant Diamond.

Obtaining Magby in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Players that have Brilliant Pearl can use specific codes to trade for Magby. Using the Pokémon’s Pokédex number, players can locate a trade. The first four digits will be for the Pokémon that players want to trade, and the other four will be for Magby. For example, if Brilliant Diamond players want to trade Elekid for Magby, they can use the code: 0239-0240. It may take a few attempts to locate a trade, but players should be able to complete one without too much trouble.

By going to the Grand Underground in Shining Pearl and exploring hideaways, players may come across this rare Pokémon. Magby can be found in the Volcanic Cave, Typho Cave, or Sandsear Cave in the Grand Underground. The spawn rate for Magby is low, so players may need to leave and return to the same Pokémon Hideaway multiple times. Once players spot Magby roaming in one of the aforementioned hideaways, they can run into it to start the battle. Using a Quick Ball or Dusk Ball will help players quickly catch Magby.

Once Magby is caught, players can level it up to evolve it into Magmar. Unfortunately, to obtain a Magmortar, players will need to trade for a Magmar holding a Magmarizer. This means that Brilliant Diamond players who are ultimately after a Magmortar may want to trade directly for it instead of getting Magby first. Magby is one of many Pokémon that can only be found in the Grand Underground’s Pokémon Hideaways.
