How To Find (& Catch) Shiftry in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Pokémon Sword & Shield players looking for a competent Grass and Dark-type should look no further than Shiftry. This forest guardian originated in the Hoenn region and causes frigid windstorms with its leaves. Few encounter this treacherous entity, as it resides deep in ancient forests. However, their first evolved form, Seedot, are common. Ever since its inclusion in the Pokémon series, it’s always been a version exclusive; this time, it can only be found in Sword.

This Pokémon’s menacing demeanor is also seen in combat, where it overwhelms its foes with incredibly high Attack and Special Attack. On top of that, they learn moves that cover a large range of types: Rockslide, Focus Blast, Heat Wave, and more. Shiftry excels at fighting on Sunny Day teams, which are teams that utilize sunny weather conditions in battle. Not only will its powerful Solar Beam and Solar Blade moves take no turn to charge, but this Grass type’s speed is doubled in sunlight thanks to its Chlorophyll ability. For those that want this hard-hitting menace, here’s a look at where to find them in the Galar region.

Catching Shiftry in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Shiftry is an incredibly rare Pokémon in the Galar region, only appearing in the Dappled Grove wild area. Players can find it as a special overworld encounter, but even then, its appearance rate is incredibly low. The easier way to obtain this forest dweller is to evolve it from its pre-evolution, Nuzleaf. They are found in the same wild area but are more common in the grass on Route 5. Once caught, they must use a Leaf Stone for its evolution. Conveniently, there is one found in the western portion of Turffield, the town adjacent to Route 5. This early access to Shiftry is fantastic, as the next gym leader in Hulbury, who specializes in Water-types, is weak to Grass-type moves. In case this Leaf Stone was already used on another Pokémon, they can be continuously found at the Lake of Outrage. As only Sword players can encounter this version exclusive, Shield players must find a friend that’s willing to trade it.

Nuzleaf is relatively easy to catch, as they’re less than level 20 on Route 5. Weaken it with non-lethal moves to whittle down its health, and it should be caught fairly easily. Shiftry on the other hand are more difficult due to their higher attacking stats. They’re moveset in the wild is a bit more unpredictable, as it draws from every possible move it can learn naturally. This means they can have anything, from weak attacks like Tackle to strong ones like Leaf Blade. Bringing Pokémon with Sap Sipper will negate their Grass moves, and Fighting, Fairy and Dark types will resist their Dark attacks. There’s a chance it will have the Early Bird ability, waking it from Sleep sooner than normal. As mentioned earlier, Chlorophyll is a much better ability to have, so it may be wise to flee and find another with that trait instead.
