While Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is only a spin-off series featuring turn-based style combat, the game retains many of the features that truly make Monster Hunter stand out from all other games. Although fans and critics have claimed that is it a pseudo Pokémon game, Monster Hunter Stories 2 continues to uphold the weapon and armor crafting that the main series of games have. Players still need to fight and defeat Monsters in order to craft better material, as well as gather other items used for crafting across the vast landscape of Wings of Ruin.

Returning fans of Monster Hunter know all too well the trouble of finding specific items. In the main series, players either have to capture or kill (and carve) Monsters to receive some of the rarer rewards. Monster Hunter Stories 2 does not have these features, and instead, has a ranking system per fight that can determine the rewards players receive. Players can find rare rewards like Bottle Caps in Everden chests, but the majority of crafting items will be earned by defeating Monsters.

The Flame Sac makes its return as an item for crafting rarer weapons and armor, and early on it becomes a challenge to earn even one of these from a fight. The Flame Sac is needed to craft items like the final upgrade of the Chicken Decaptitaro Great Sword, the second strongest Great Sword in the early game, and is only a drop reward from some of the toughest Monsters. Additionally, Flame Sacs are used to upgrade various pieces of equipment that are associated with fire. Hunting a Yian Kut-Ku is the only way to receive a Flame Sac early on, but players who fight any Monster that breathes fire, like Anjanath, will be able to get a Flame Sac in Monster Hunter Stories 2.

With enough patience and grind-time players can earn as many Flame Sacs as they require. Yian Kut-Kus are only found in Rare Monster Dens at the beginning of Monster Hunter Stories 2. They aren’t particularly strong unless players choose to hunt them as soon as they’re free to explore the rest of Hakolo Island with weak weapons and armor. However, put a little time into grabbing some stronger gear first and soon they’ll be easy enough to defeat. The quicker that players can defeat a Monster, the better rank they’ll score in the fight, and the better rewards they’ll earn in return.

The only way to farm Flame Sacs in Monster Hunter Stories 2 is to fight Monsters that breathe fire, making the Yian Kut-Ku the perfect Monster to farm this material. Riders have a better chance of earning Flame Sacs with higher ranking fights, and they can do this by winning Head-to-Heads, using Kinship Attacks, Skill Attacks, Synchronizing with their Monstie, winning the fight in fewer turns, and more. All of these accomplishments are worth a certain number of points, and players need a minimum of 400 points to earn an A rank. There’s still no guarantee, no even in S rank (500 points), but it is certain the Flame Sacs can be awarded to players who win fights against Yian Kut-Kus – and other Fire Monsters later in the game.
