How to Find Pokémon With Hidden Abilities in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

After finishing Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, players can continue their Trainer experience by exploring the post-game and other higher-level content, including some elements that were not present in the original Generation IV games. Hidden Abilities are one of these nifty metagame expansions introduced after Diamond and Pearl that will help strengthen players’ competitive teams and keep players coming back for more Pokémon.

Hidden Abilities are rare Abilities that each Pokémon species can possess under certain circumstances. Although they function like regular Abilities, the chances of randomly encountering a Pokémon with a Hidden Ability in the wild are slim to none. Still, players looking to add a potentially powerful new team member should be able to obtain them using certain methods.

Using the Poké Radar to Find Hidden Ability Pokémon

Once the player has defeated Cynthia and completed their Sinnoh Pokédex, they should return to Sandgem Town and speak to Professor Rowan in his lab. He will give the player the Poké Radar, a device that will help identify patches of grass where the wild Pokémon are lurking. After obtaining and registering the Poké Radar, the player will be ready to discover Pokémon with Hidden Abilities in tall grass.

Stocking up on Repels at any Poké Mart help make the process easier. From there, head to any patch of grass that contains the Pokémon you hope to find and use one of those Repels. When the player steps into the grass and activates the Poké Radar, four patches of grass will rustle in their vicinity. Players should keep an eye out for the rustling patch that stands out among the rest, as the chance of encountering a Pokémon with its Hidden Ability in the patches of grass that pop up is 1 in 128.

If the rustling patches all look the same, the player can reset the Poké Radar by walking 50 steps. This will reactivate it, allowing player to try again. This method requires patience, but it’s easy to repeat and can help trainers find just about any Pokémon that can be found in the wild.

Changing a Pokémon’s Ability Using Ability Patches

Ability Patches are consumable items allows a trainer to change their Pokémon’s ability from whatever standard one they have to a Hidden Ability. However, it does not work the other way round, and there is no way to restore the Pokémon’s original Ability once the player uses an Ability Patch. These can be obtained for 200 BP (Battle Points) in Battle Tower, a post-game area.

From a technical standpoint, applying an Ability Patch is the easiest way for the player to awaken the Hidden Ability within the Pokémon of their choice. However, amassing the Battle Points needed for an Ability Patch requires a lot of grinding and strategizing. Because of this, it’s best to wait to use one on a Pokémon that’s already viable for competitive play and whose Hidden Ability is the best fit for the player’s intended strategy.

How to Obtain Pokémon With Hidden Abilities Through Breeding

Breeding can also result in Pokémon with Hidden Abilities, provided that the Pokémon being left at the Daycare together are either different species (which includes breeding with Ditto). Breeding two of the same Pokémon will always yield offspring with a Standard Ability, so it should be avoided when aiming for Pokémon with Hidden Abilities.

With this method, it is important to pay attention to who carries the Hidden Ability. If the female Pokémon has a Hidden Ability, the offspring will have a 60 percent chance of inheriting that Ability because it will be the same Pokémon species as its mother. However, there is no chance of a Pokémon inheriting a Hidden Ability from its father.

Breeding with Ditto is slightly less complicated because of its lack of gender and ability to breed with anything outside of the “No Eggs” group. Since Ditto does not produce any offspring of its own, male Pokémon can pass their own Hidden Ability via breeding. Any Pokémon hatched after breeding with Ditto has a 60 percent chance of inheriting a Hidden Ability from its non-Ditto parent.
