Despite it being a running joke in Blizzard games that there is no cow level, it turns out there is a secret cow level in Diablo 2: Resurrected. It does feature some powerful enemies and potentially good loot. Though because of the game’s randomness, it is based on luck as to whether players will get anything good.
It is not something that players can just stumble across. It requires specific actions and items to get to, so if players don’t know what to do to make the secret cow level appear, it is possible that they will play through the entire game and never see it.
The first thing that players must do is beat Diablo 2’s final boss for the difficulty level they are playing on. Most of the time this will be Baal because generally, players elect to play with the expansion. It is possible to play the original version of the game without the expansion, and if that is the case, players will just have to beat Diablo.
Making the Secret Cow Level Appear in Diablo 2: Resurrected
When players get to Tristram to rescue Deckard Cain, they may encounter some other characters who appeared in the first Diablo. One of these is Griswold, the town blacksmith. Tragically, he is now undead, but at least he can drop some good items when he dies (again). Players can also stumble across the body of Wirt. He is found to the north of town. In addition to dropping a large amount of gold, he also drops Wirt’s Leg. It is a peg leg that has three slots and can be used as a weapon, but it’s not very effective. Hold onto it though because it will become useful later.
Even if they miss it though, players can always come back and get the leg later. If they find themselves running out of inventory and storage space during the game, don’t worry, they can ditch the leg until they need it. This won’t happen as much, as Resurrected has increased storage space, in addition to other Diablo 2 improvements, but it can still happen. Once players have beaten the final boss, return to the Rogue Encampment (the town in Act I) at the same difficulty level. Combine a Tome of Town Portal with Wirt’s Leg in the Horadric Cube, and it will open a red portal. Go through it, and it leads to the secret cow level. Note that the Tome of Town Portal does not need to be full for this to work.
The secret cow level is known as Moo Moo Farm and is filled with bardiche-wielding bipedal cows called Hell Bovines. Leading the Hell Bovines is The Cow King. Formerly, killing him meant that the portal wouldn’t open again on the same difficulty level, but that has changed in Diablo 2: Resurrected. The Cow King always appears inside the fenced enclosure, so it is easy to avoid him if players so choose. He is still a tough enemy.
