It is possible to get a Shiny starter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. At the start of every player’s Pokémon journey, they are given the option to choose between three starter Pokémon. In the case of Diamond and Pearl, players will be able to choose between Turtwig, Piplup, and Chimchar. While each Pokémon has its own strength and weaknesses, it will ultimately be the player’s partner for the majority of the game. For those players looking to start their adventure with a Shiny starter, there is a way to make it happen.

Shiny Pokémon are extremely rare colored variants of Pokémon, and every species has its own Shiny version. These Shiny Pokémon also do not have any distinguishable abilities, stats, or moves. The only things that are different between Shiny Pokémon and the originals are the colors and the animation that happens when they are thrown into battle. When a Shiny Pokémon is sent out, a sparkle will play every time. Finding a Shiny Pokémon can be incredibly time-consuming since it’s completely luck-based. There are times when The Pokémon Company will host events where players can get Shiny Pokémon, as they did they with Shiny Celebi in Pokémon Sword and Shield, but these don’t happen often. The basic odds to find a Shiny Pokémon is 1/4096. This means for every encounter, it has a 1/4096 chance of being Shiny. These odds can be improved later in the game, but players looking to get a Shiny starter will need to do it with these odds.

In order to to find a Shiny starter in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, players will need to make their way to Lake Verity. This is right at the beginning of the game before players will get to choose their starter Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl. Right before entering the lake, players should turn off autosave in the settings. Not only that, but turn off battle animations and set the text speed to ‘fast’. Manually save in the pause screen directly before the entrance and go inside. This is when the Shiny hunt will begin.

Players will be treated to a cutscene of Barry wanting to explore the Lake. After finding Professor Rowan’s briefcase, the boys will be attacked by a flock of Starly. This is when players will be given the choice between Chimchar, Piplup, or Turtwig. Choose the desired starter and wait for the battle to begin. Wait until the player’s starter Pokémon has been sent out. If it’s not Shiny, restart the game and reload the save. Now, repeat this process until the Shiny form appears.

Since this is the beginning of the game, players can’t do anything to alter the Shiny Odds, meaning players are stuck with a 1/4096 chance of finding it. These are the lowest Shiny odds in the game but can make the process of finding it much more rewarding. Although, players can breed Shiny Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl later in the game. Shiny Hunting can be incredibly time-consuming but finally finding that Shiny starter will feel like winning the lottery.
