How To Get The Kings Rock In Pokémon BDSP (& What It Does)

The King’s Rock is a rare item in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl that players can use to evolve certain species of Pokémon. Like the many Evolution Stones that can be found in the game, the King’s Rock can be held by a Pokémon to cause it to evolve, but in order for evolution to occur, these Pokémon must also be traded while holding the King’s Rock. Therefore, it isn’t actually considered one of the game’s Evolution Stones, despite having a similar function.

The King’s Rock can be given to a Poliwhirl to evolve it into a Politoed, and it can also be used to evolve Slowpoke into Slowking. However, Slowpoke will evolve into Slowbro when it reaches level 37, so players will have to evolve it into Slowking with the King’s Rock beforehand if they don’t want it to go down its typical evolutionary path. Poliwhirl, however, won’t evolve into Poliwrath without holding a Water Stone, so players don’t have to worry about using the King’s Rock on it before it reaches a certain level. In addition to its evolutionary use, a Pokémon that inflicts damage in battle while holding the King’s Rock has a chance to make its target flinch as well.

Trainers must trade their Poliwhirl or Slowpoke while it’s holding a King’s Rock to get it to evolve. The trade can occur either locally or globally, but it’s best to trade with someone who will trade the evolved Politoed or Slowking back after the fact. However, King’s Rocks can be difficult to come by, as this rare item can’t be found by exploring Sinnoh’s overworld and can only be found by chance in the Grand Underground or as a wild Pokémon’s held item.

Where To Find The King’s Rock In Pokémon BDSP

King’s Rocks can be found by catching a wild Poliwhirl in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. In addition, Poliwhirl can be found in the Pokémon Hideaways in Sinnoh’s Grand Underground, including its Fountainspring Caves, Grassland Caves, Riverbank Caves, Still-Water Caverns, and Sunlit Caverns. They can also be encountered in the Sinnoh overworld on Route 225 when fishing with the Super Rod or on Routes 225, 227, and 228 while Surfing. Each Poliwhirl has a 5% chance of holding a King’s Rock, so players may have to catch a few before finding the item they’re looking for.

King’s Rocks can also be found by players who get lucky while digging in the Grand Underground. Dig sites can be found in the walls of the tunnels at the locations indicated by yellow dots on the mini-map, and players can use their pickaxe and hammer to dig for a variety of rare treasures. However, the wall will collapse after too many hits, causing any King’s Rocks left partially covered to be lost inside the rubble, so players should take care to dig strategically and reveal as many treasures as possible.
