While Apple’s AirDrop is a useful tool, not all users will want their iPhone to have it switched on all of the time. AirDrop allows users to share photos, documents, and other files between Apple devices that are in close proximity to each other. It works with iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches, and Mac computers.
To transfer a file using AirDrop, two users need to be close to each other with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on and personal hotspots turned off. The sender just needs to tap the sharing icon on a file, tap the AirDrop button, and then either point their iPhone 11 or 12 at another of the two models or select a contact or nearby device The person receiving the file will need their AirDrop set to receive from Contacts Only, in which case the sender will need to be in their contacts, or from Everyone. When not using AirDrop, it’s worth setting it to the third and final mode Receiving Off as this can help to save a device’s battery life and protect device security.
As Apple explains, there are two ways to do this on the iPhone. The first is to go to Settings and then tap General. Here, users will find the AirDrop option and, once they’ve tapped that, they can choose to set it to Receiving Off (or one of the other settings). Alternatively, users can change the settings via the Control Center on their device. This is accessed either by swiping down from the top right corner on some devices, or up from the bottom of the screen on others. Users should then tap and hold the network settings card and then tap the AirDrop icon once that has opened. Once here, users can set AirDrop to Receiving Off or one of the other options.

It’s important to know that anyone with an Apple device can send a file to anyone nearby whose AirDrop is set to Everyone. For that reason, iPhone users should be careful about what received files they choose to accept if they don’t know who has sent it. Using the Contacts Only or Receiving Off settings eliminates the risk of being sent unwanted files from strangers. There have been widespread reports over the years of people receiving sexually explicit images or otherwise unwanted files to users while using public transport, which can feel not only intrusive but threatening too due to the proximity within which senders must be.
Apple also notes that if a user can’t change their AirDrop setting from Receiving Off then it is likely due to a Screen Time digital wellbeing restriction on their iPhone. To get around this, users should navigate to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, tap Allowed Apps, and then turn AirDrop on.
