The Pokemon franchise is designed around single-player experiences and PVP multiplayer battles. It’s not built for the group party dynamics of a game like Dungeons & Dragons, but the monsters from Pokemon can still be used as enemies for parties to face. To this end, we have statted out the Gastly line for use in D&D adventures.

There were a few types in Pokemon Red & Blue that were barely represented. In the first generation of games, the only three Ghost-type Pokemon were Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar. It was a pain to acquire Gengar, as it was a trade evolution, so people playing the games on an emulator couldn’t even own one. The Gastly line was composed of three powerful Pokemon, and many players feared facing Agatha’s twin Gengar at the end of the game. Gengar has managed to stay relevant over the years, as it received a Mega Evolution and a Gigantamax form, which is a claim that even Pikachu cannot make.

Gastly’s Stats

There are many mischief-makers in the world, and some love pulling pranks so much that they linger on after death. When a prankster dies in the middle of completing a jape, they leave a fragment of their personality behind. Over time, this fragment will become infused with necrotic energy, creating a creature that lives for mischief. A Gastly is a creature that barely has any presence left in the world, and only has fleeting memories of its life. All it knows for sure is that it loves causing chaos, which it does with its magical Confuse Ray attack. A Gastly likes to cause trouble, but it won’t stick around for long if it thinks its targets have the capacity to harm it.

Haunter’s Stats

The longer a Gastly remains in the world, the more it starts to remember of its previous life. This knowledge starts to corrupt the Gastly, transforming it into a more malicious creature, known as a Haunter.

Haunter is far more capable of harming living creatures than Gastly. It often watches living beings from afar, until its jealousy starts to overcome it, and it lashes out in disgust. The most feared ability of the Haunter is Destiny Bond, where it ties its remaining energy to the life force of its target, in the hopes of bringing it down, through one last act of spite.

Gengar’s Stats

If a Haunter manages to travel to distant lands, it will develop into a form that more closely resembles its previous life. This creature is called a Gengar, and it abandons the hatred it has lived with for so long. Instead, it seeks to live through the memories of others. Gengar’s connection to magic has grown so strong that it can invade the dreams of sleeping foes, allowing it to devour their memories. This isn’t meant as a malicious act, rather, it’s the only way Gengar can ever hope to experience being alive again. It’s said that if Gengar devours enough dreams, it will finally piece together the memories of its previous life, allowing it to enter the afterlife and join the spirit of the mortal it was broken away from.
