The Metal Cap allows Mario to walk underwater and no longer take damage in Super Mario 64. This guide will help players unlock it. Super Mario 64 is his first 3D adventure, releasing back on the Nintendo 64 in 1996. In this title, Mario is tasked with collecting power stars hidden around various paintings inside of Princess Peach’s castle. While the player only needs 70 stars for the final conflict, there are 120 stars to collect to 100% the game. Since then, Mario has had various 3D adventures that have taken him to tropical islands and the deep reaches of outer space. Throughout these adventures, Mario will find power-ups that will help him collect more power stars. Here’s how players can unlock the Metal Cap in Super Mario 64.

The most recent iteration of the game comes in the form of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the 35th-anniversary collection of all of Mario’s biggest 3D adventures (except for Super Mario Galaxy 2 for some unknown reason). While the games themselves only feature higher resolution graphics and textures, a majority of these games remain intact as when they were originally released. In the case with Super Mario 64, many of the secrets of the castle are still in the same locations they were in when the game first released. Here’s where to unlock the Metal Cap in Super Mario 64.

The Metal Cap can only be found once the player has access to the basement area of the castle. This can be unlocked by beating Bowser the first time. Now, head over to Hazy Maze Cave and go to the back of the lake to find a blue sea creature in the water. Mario can control this creature by ground-pounding on its head and control it to a metal door in the back. Follow this pathway to find the Behind The Waterfall level. Follow it to find a large Green Button and this will unlock the Metal Cap all around the Castle.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars will only be available until the end of March 2021. It’s unknown why this collection of Mario’s biggest 3D ventures will only be around for a limited time. Not only that, but there are currently no plans to bring Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the Nintendo Switch. It could possibly be released in the future as downloadable content. Regardless, make sure to get this collection before it disappears forever.
