Clubhouse has introduced support for spatial audio to make the live audio chatroom conversations on its platform even more immersive. Over the course of the past few months, the popular chat app has added a ton of useful features, with the most recent addition being the Backchannel tool that lets users chat with participants in a live conversation. Clubhouse has also finally shed its invite-only mantra, opening the service to a wider audience.

The platform, which stirred a live audio craze within a year of hitting the mobile platform, has been facing some heat lately over the abusive use of its platform for nuisances such as spreading vaccine misinformation and hateful dialogue. To tackle the moderation issue, the company is said to be working on a ‘room reporting’ tool as well. Social media account linking made its way to Clubhouse a couple of months ago, and a creator accelerator program was also launched recently. But for a platform that is all about voice-based interactions, what matters the most is how the core audio strategy is executed.

And that’s where spatial audio support on Clubhouse can prove to be the most potent weapon in its arsenal against the likes of Twitter Spaces and other copycats. Broadly speaking, spatial audio is a type of 3D audio effect that makes the listener feel as if the sound is coming from all directions, somewhat like a surround sound experience, but more realistic. Sony has been offering its take on this tech under the name 360 Reality Audio, while Apple took a stab at it with its own version called spatial audio for the AirPods devices. Clubhouse claims that spatial audio will let users feel as if the speaker’s voice is floating in a 3D landscape around them.

Spatial Audio Truly Elevates The Audio Chatrooms Experience

Unfortunately, spatial audio is currently available only on Clubhouse’s iOS client. The company assures that this feature will make its way to the Android app soon. For those who own a compatible Apple audio wearable such as the expensive AirPods Max noise-canceling cans, they will now be able to experience the benefits of head tracking and spatial audio. Clubhouse says it will implement spatial audio depending on the number of speakers and the tone of the conversation. For example, if there’s a single speaker hosting a comedy show, the comedian’s voice will appear as if it’s coming from a stage ahead, while the applause from the audience will offer a surround sound feel to mimic a real-life audience.

Clubhouse says its spatial audio feature will work best with headphones, both wired and wireless. At the moment, a speaker using Bluetooth headphones won’t be able to get the surround sound feel due to some technical limitations, but it will soon be fixed. In order to take advantage of the new feature, users will have to enable the spatial audio option in the iOS Settings menu after installing the app’s latest version on their iPhones. It now remains to be seen how soon rivals such as Spaces, Facebook as well as Instagram, and Reddit among others catch with Clubhouse at providing a superior chatroom experience.
