The most frustrating part of some open world games are finding those meticulously hidden items. Thankfully, Ghost of Tsushima has introduced an interesting new mechanic to aid players in finding locations and items they’d otherwise miss.
While exploring the island of Tsushima, Jin will encounter a Gold Bird trying desperately to get his attention. Players should also keep their ears sharp if they don’t see the bird, its presence will be indicated with a high pitched whistle. This guide will help players understand the purpose of the Golden Birds and how to most effectively use them.
Following the Golden Birds in Ghost of Tsushima
At the beginning of the game, it is noted that these Golden Birds know all the secrets of Tsushima Island. Similar to how foxes will guide players to their dens, the Golden Bird will lead Jin to nearby items and locations. Where the bird will bring Jin is totally random. Sometimes it will lead him to hot springs, other times it’ll guide him to bamboo strike locations. The Golden Bird will even perch itself outside a house containing a Mongol Artifact or other collectable. Players don’t have a way of knowing where the bird is bringing them, but they can make an educated guess based on their location on the map.
Following the bird is incredibly easy. The mechanic is similar to catching Sea Shanties in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. Jin must follow the bird as it weaves through trees and around buildings. However, should Jin loose track of it, the bird will fly back towards him as if to say, ‘Hey! Listen!’
Sometimes the birds timing is a little off, as Jin might be in the middle of raiding a Mongol Encampment, or rescuing a hostage in the middle of the road. Should players choose not to follow the bird, they should make note that its presence indicates something of value nearby. The bird will never take players too far. If one flies by, one can safely assume there’s something they should check out within a 100 meter radius. The bird will continue to make its rounds until players find what it’s trying to show them. Rest assured that they lose track of the bird, it will fly back around eventually. If players have invested technique points into harnessing the guiding winds, they’ll be able to easily find what the birds are trying to show them.
Ghost of Tsushima has done an amazing job of simplifying the open world RGP experience that makes the player’s life easier without taking the explorative fun out of it. The addition of Golden Birds rewards players inquisitive nature and will guide them to the items they are looking to find once close enough. Nothing is more annoying than wasting twenty minutes combing a mountain side for a certain collectible.
