Despite WandaVision episode 8’s Pietro explanation, Evan Peters’ character could still be the Quicksilver from Fox’s X-Men movies. After weeks of speculation and uncertainty by both audiences and Wanda herself, it was revealed that WandaVision’s take on the speedster Avenger was really just a pawn of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).
Audiences, along with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, were shocked when Evan Peters’ Pietro Maximoff arrived at Wanda’s door. Initially believed to be a “recast” version of her brother from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Pietro was dismissed as an imposter by both Wanda and Vision (Paul Bettany) in episode 7. Agatha later said that it was she who engineered Wanda and Pietro’s family reunion. Episode 8 revealed more details about his character and explained the reason for why he doesn’t look like Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver from the MCU. Apparently, the condition and location of his body made it impossible for Agatha to raise him with necromancy, thus forcing her to use other methods to fool Wanda.
The Pietro that Wanda spoke with wasn’t her brother, but it’s still possible that he is a version of Quicksilver. Agatha doesn’t perfectly spell out who and what “fake Pietro” is, but does say that he’s a product of a “crystalline possession,” which seems to be an original term. What this really means isn’t clear, but the word “possession” could provide a clue. First of all, it indicates that the show’s Quicksilver isn’t just a magical manifestation. Instead, he may be a living person who’s being controlled by Agatha. But since she doesn’t elaborate on the nature of the spell, that will remain unconfirmed for now.
Either way, Agatha simply casting a possession spell doesn’t make sense of why he has super speed or why he looks like the hero from the X-Men films. A possible explanation that WandaVision can offer in the season finale is that Agatha somehow pulled him for the multiverse. She could have magically yanked Pietro Maximoff out of the reality where the X-Men movies are set and then performed this “crystalline possession” on him, which is what allowed him to be her “eyes and ears.” If that’s true, then Pietro isn’t responsible for his actions. Being controlled by Agatha would also provide a reason for why he appeared to remember Wanda, Quicksilver’s death, and their childhood, despite never actually experiencing those things. If Agatha was the one pulling the strings the whole time, then Pietro never did have those memories in the first place. They were all Agatha’s lies.
WandaVision revealing that its Quicksilver was a possessed Pietro Maximoff from Fox’s X-Men franchise would help the show avoid a major disappointment and simultaneously deliver a big multiverse connection that works. Using Fox’s Quicksilver was considered an unprecedented move, plus fans were thrilled to have the classic Avenger from Marvel Comics back in the MCU. The character not being any version of Quicksilver would certainly dampen the significance of that moment. It’s possible that Marvel is holding off on confirming a link to the multiverse because it’s saving that for the end of the series, which will lead directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
