Both Sonic the Hedgehog and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are headed for massive events that will be set up in IDW Publishing’s comics released on Free Comic Book Day. The day celebrating the medium of comics will allow longtime fans and new readers alike to see the beginnings of upcoming storylines for the two titles.

A few of IDW’s most popular characters include Sonic and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who have similarly cemented themselves in the lives of many fans’ childhood. In the past, they have been a part of Free Comic Book Day, as celebrated by comic book shops. Although most times, comics offered by publishers on the day are simple entry points for new readers, IDW will be taking a different approach on the next Free Comic Book Day.

IDW Publishing has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will have a lot to offer fans on May 7, 2022. The publisher will release two one-shot issues titled Sonic the Hedgehog – Free Comic Book Day Special 2022 along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Free Comic Book Day Special 2022. Both one-shots are set to explore exciting new storylines for the titular heroes. Sonic will be written by Ian Flynn, with art and a cover by Adam Bryce Thomas. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be written by Tom Waltz, with art and a cover by Sophie Campbell.

As Sonic partners up with Tails and Knuckles, they embark on a new adventure. It is soon revealed that there is another speedster that rivals Sonic, in the form of an evil counterpart known as “Surge.” She will show off her speed against Sonic in a climatic battle in the upcoming Issue #50, promising to deliver on a premise that had been heightened throughout the years. Soon, Sonic and Surge will learn who is truly the fastest in the town.

Meanwhile, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are being teased to break out of the locked-down section of Manhattan called “Mutant Town.” However, there is a twist as it might not be the same turtles that fans know. Brand new mutants are causing havoc through New York City, with friends and foes of the actual Ninja Turtles getting ready for an epic battle. Known as “the Rat King,” the villain has a new scheme known as the Armageddon Game is only beginning for the Turtles. The one-shot is kicking off an event coming from the creative team of Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, and creator Kevin Eastman. Fans can look forward to Free Comic Book Day in 2022 for an early start on Sonic and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ next big adventures.
