Warning: contains spoilers for Avengers Mech Strike #2!

Marvel has shown that Hulk’s new armor is his funniest version yet. The latest issue of Avengers Mech Strike #2 reveals that there might be room for more than just Bruce Banner in a super-suit of armor. Well, if it was at least a close fit, even if not quite perfect. As readers find out Hulk is definitely a master of smashing things.

Avengers Mech Strike #2 by Jed Mackay with art by Carlos Magno, this series focuses on the Avengers fighting giant monsters called biomechanoids. They consume energy and are incredibly destructive. Tony Stark unveiled mech suits made of vibranium to fight them with, but so far the threat is still too great for the team to handle. Each hero has improved weapons and plenty of experience fighting these monsters, yet they keep coming and the suits need time to get repairs done between fights.

The second issue of Avengers Mech Strike delivers more surprises and troubles for the Avengers to handle. Admits losses for the team and revelations about the threat they are facing, the comic also provides a good laugh. The Hulk is known for smashing things, but in this series, he was initially a liability. The Hulk is a giant energy source that would supercharge his enemies if they got proper access to him. Banner begins this fight in his mech suit, still able to deliver blows, but partway through, fans realize that not even a mech can contain the Hulk.

Midway through a fight, Captain America is talking to Bruce who says that he is initiating “transformation.” Immediately after, Cap tries talking to Banner, only to be met conversationally by the Hulk. Tony must have made Banner’s suit extra roomy because even the Hulk can fit into it! Or at least he almost did. While delivering blows to the biomechanoids, Hulk can be seen…Hulking and ultimately, he ends up popping off the head of his suit. Fans love the Hulkbuster armor, but this doesn’t seem to be what they had in mind as he literally busters out of his mech.

Though largely humorous, particularly due to shards of the suit flying away as the Hulk literally blows his top, this sequence reveals a lot about the Hulk and these suits. For starters, this suit is a protective measure to keep the biomechanoids from absorbing Hulk’s energy. This makes him less of a liability now. Additionally, it is clear that Tony designed this suit in a way that would allow Bruce to use both sides of himself effectively. It gives Banner a power-up to smash enemies without having to turn into Hulk, but it also is roomy enough to FIT Hulk. Banner knows this since he purposely initiates his change mid-battle. Hulk can have double the smash power. Beyond that, it also means that under particular circumstances, Hulk has the ability to damage and break vibranium. He doesn’t simply release the head covering, he smashes it. No matter how updated the technology Hulk and Banner use, this is proof that old-fashioned smashing is still very effective – though smashing the suit wasn’t what the Avengers probably had in mind.
