Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This is a bold new take on the comic of the same name, created by Charles Forsman, who also created the comic that Netflix’s The End Of The F***ing World is based on. At this moment where teen dramas and comedies are becoming more popular, we are flooded with amazing new shows.

I Am Not Okay With This sticks out of the pack as the show that’s making headlines for its excellent depictions of grief and teen girl anger and angst. Even though the show is fueled by Syd’s angst, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other angsty characters in the show.

Check out our list of every main character, ranked by level of teen angst.

10 Liam

Liam, despite being the youngest, is the character with the least amount of teen angst. He’s fairly cool-headed even when he’s about to get punched in the face or he’s going to ask a girl out, and only explodes at his sister once when he thinks that what Syd said to his bully made him hit Liam.

He tries to ease the tension between his mom and sister, who are clearly more angsty than him. Even when his hedgehog unexpectedly dies, he’s sad. but somehow not angsty or moody about it, showing a healthy amount of sadness.

9 Mr. File

Despite clearly being over his job, Mr. File is somehow able to keep his cool, not losing it when Brad makes a silly joke in class about erections and handjobs, or when he finds him copying of Dina’s test. He simply tells them to go to detention, and that’s that.

He seems fairly neutral most of the time, even chipper at moments, but never really angsty or grumpy. Since we don’t see much of him, except as he’s sitting at the desk watching the students as they take their test, or telling them about the anatomy of the sexual reproductive organs, we don’t really get to see him outside of his teacher element.

8 Ricky

Somehow Ricky seems to always be in a good mood. Granted, we only really see him at his own birthday party, laughing at Brad’s jokes in class, and drinking outdoors with his friend, but nevertheless, Brad’s best friend doesn’t seem to have an angsty bone in his body, though he seems to be fairly privileged, rich and popular, so why would he?

Hopefully, with the absence of Brad in the possible second season, we might get more of Ricky, who is just the best friend character, not much more than a 2D caricature. Maybe in the second season, since Brad’s death, he’ll have something to be more angsty about.

7 Mr. Whitaker

While Mr. Whitaker doesn’t exactly exude teen angst as he’s a fairly confident man who is guided by morals and discipline, he’s also fairly moody and petulant when the teens at his school cause chaos. He screams “I’m too old for this shit” when he ends up chasing a burrito explosion that sounds off the smoke alarm and a loud noise that doesn’t sound so good.

He becomes most angsty at that moment, and the expression of his face is filled with anxiety, annoyance, and deep despair. Having to deal with teenagers often makes you feel like one. Which brings us to our next character…

6 Maggie

Maggie is at her most angsty when she’s talking to her daughter Syd, the main character in I Am Not Okay With This. Syd’s mom seems pretty high strung from her 60 hour work week as a waitress at dinner, and as such, it doesn’t take much to set her off, sending her into a spiral or a mood.

When she tells her daughter that it’s not fair that Syd always chose her dad over her mom, even in death, her most petulant teen attitude comes out, having unfair expectations of her daughter. She becomes a teen who equals Syd’s own moodiness and angst, and often we’re left wondering who’s the mom and who’s the kid.

5 Stanley

One of the funnier characters in I Am Not Okay With This, Stanley’s level of angst is not actually that high. He bounces back pretty easily when feeling disappointed, including when Syd rejects her on multiple occasions, or when she flips out on him, her anger getting the best of her.

The only moment Stanley really festers in his teen angst is when his date ditches him at the dance, and he seems Syd, who told him she wasn’t going, at the dance with Dina. He puts on his sunglasses inside, with a moody look on his face, and sits in the bleachers pouting. But that doesn’t last long when Syd apologizes and his usual smile returns.

4 Dina

Dina’s most angsty moment is when Syd finds her on the bed in a room at Ricky’s birthday party, clearly having been crying, and looking like her life has ended. Dina tells Syd when she asks what’s wrong, that Brad got mad at her for not hanging out with him at the party, and that he took his football jacket back, and that they’ve probably broken up.

It takes a lot for Syd to get her to smile, making jokes and being there for her. Surprisingly, most of the teens in I Am Not Okay With This are not that angsty, except for the last three on this list…

3 Jenny

Jenny is one of the most angsty teens in I Am Not Okay With This, her face always scrunched up in a scowl, always looking like she ate something sour. She’s a pretty rebellious, devil may care character, not impressed by other people. She doesn’t care how her actions affect others and that she gets a sick pleasure out of messing up other people’s lives, which is the only time she doesn’t look as moody.

Given Jenny’s character is pretty two-dimensional, like most of the other side characters in I Am Not Okay With This, we don’t know why she acts the way she does, but something must be up.

2 Brad

Brad is pretty angsty when he doesn’t get what he wants. When he’s popular and everyone likes him, he’s happy and smiling and running the school. But as soon as things don’t go his way, he turns sour, drinks a lot, and acts mean.

He becomes insecure and blames others for his problems, his attitude taking on a very “woe is me” narrative. When things go wrong with Dina, instead of blaming himself, he blames Syd and launches into one of the most pity party speeches seen on tv.

1 Syd

The main character in Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This, and the most angsty character on the show, Syd’s angst (and anger) are like characters of their own, taking up so much space in her life, and fuelling most of the plot. Clearly grieving after her dad’s death and suicide, Syd doesn’t know what to do with her grief, that gets turned into anger and angst, and she ends up kicking things, sulking, and being rude to everyone around her.

While her reasons for being angsty are very reasonable, it doesn’t stop her from being the most angsty character in I Am Not Okay With This.
