Amazon Prime’s I Know What You Did Last Summer pulls off a hat trick that did not appear in the original slasher film. The death that is the catalyst for the show is one of the Grant twins. Unbeknownst to many of their friends, the twin that died was Lennon but they believe it was Alison, who actually goes on to take on her more sociable sister’s identity.

Allison uses her smarts to take over Lennon’s life and subsequently cover up the crime. This is only one of the secrets that the group of friends must keep. All of them have something to hide and all of them use their smarts to keep it under wraps.

10 Lennon

Deceitful and savage, there is nothing Lennon will not do to get what she wants. This is one of the reasons that she is not the most likable character. She even goes so far as to ruin her twin’s life. Lennon sleeps with the boy she knows that Allison loves with no regard for anyone’s feelings. But she turned out this way for a reason. She knows more than most other characters, even though she dies in the first episode.

Lennon knows that her mother never really took her own life. She faked her death to get away from her daughters. Lennon was also smart enough to be valedictorian and get a full ride to University of Michigan. She can get away with all that she does specifically because she is smart, whether she uses this for good or evil.

9 Bruce

Smarts run in the Grant family. Bruce has learned to keep many secrets and had to know how to keep them all straight. He was able to keep the fact that his wife was still alive a secret from someone who knew him best – his daughter Allison.

Bruce also steps it up a notch when Allison accidentally kills Lennon. He immediately goes into crisis mode and convinces Allison to take Lennon’s identity. He understands that he can pull this off and constantly reminds Allison of the lengths she has to do to keep this secret under wraps. When Allison is writing a runaway note to cover up her sister’s death, Bruce knows the exact wording so no one will come looking for her.

8 Dylan

Dylan is one of the most conventionally smart characters in I Know What You Did Last Summer. After high school, he went on to MIT and cultivated his knowledge of computers. But that isn’t the only thing that makes him smart. Dylan also has immense emotional intelligence.

He is one of the first characters that automatically understands someone is killing them off one by one because of what happened the previous summer. He also feels guilt over the crime and wants to do the right thing. His smarts are the only thing that allows him to survive the scope of the series, even if he figures out who the killer is too late.

7 Johnny

Johnny is often forgotten as one of the original group of teenagers involved in the accident. He is one of the first to be murdered, mostly because he was too good for this world. Clearly, his likability would not ensure that he would survive a horror movie. Even though he was popular, Johnny has smarts that the others did not possess.

Johnny was close to finding out who Allison truly was before he died. He recognized that Allison was still smoking cigarettes when that was not a vice that Lennon possessed. He was smart enough to realize that Allison had value when everyone else did not. Johnny was as sensitive as he was intelligent.

6 Clara

Clara is smart enough to stay away from those that would do her harm. She was one of the lone survivors of the local cult’s mass suicide, which she did to keep their sacred word alive. At the same time, she had some side hustles. She raised a host of exotic spiders and preserved the bodies of local dead teens in honey.

Clara had a lot of hobbies that she kept herself educated on. She was also smart enough to indoctrinate Dylan into the ways of her cult. She thinks outside of the box and can keep her motives a secret until her death, one of the best kills in I Know What You Did Last Summer.

5 Lyla

People do not get to be Chief of Police without being smart. While their small community is not rampant with crime, Lyla does understand that there is a mystery to be solved. When Lyla learns that there is something more to the murders in the town, she becomes transfixed.

She starts to suspect that Allison is not what she says she is. After Dylan comes to her accusing Allison of lying about her identity, Lyla does her best to prove that this is the case. The only reason she isn’t successful is that Bruce protects Allison.

4 Mel Gilbert

Margot’s mother Mel Gilbert is highly observant, something that is odd for parents in the town. Besides Bruce, many of the parents are oblivious to what their children are doing. Mel keeps a close eye on her daughter and genuinely cares about her. She notices when Margot is not doing well and knows far more than she lets on.

Mel is also integral to the investigation. She has connections to a medical examiner in Boston who helps identify Clara’s spiders, which brings them closer to the killer.

3 Officer Cruise

Officer Cruise is an untapped resource in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Though he is an officer for the police department, he is often not taken seriously. However, Cruise’s Type A personality allows him to see many things that people overlook.

He has great instincts which led him to question Johnny’s remains. He automatically knew to do an autopsy on the dead teen, which led them to an important clue. His instinct that a serial killer is running around was ultimately proven correct.

2 Margot

Margot accomplishes what no other character was able to do. She immediately understood that Allison was lying about being Lennon. She did this only by looking at Allison’s social media. This is what drives Margot to try and push Allison out into the open by committing serial murders. This is a scary concept which is something that I Know What You Did Last Summer does better than Scream.

This does not work on Allison, but Margot continues to prove how smart she is. She gets away with the murders and can point the case in multiple different directions by doing so. She is one of the smartest of the characters since she gets away with murder in the end.

1 Allison

While Lennon was considered the smarter twin, Allison has proven herself to be the brightest. Only the smartest twin could take over her sister’s identity and convince almost everyone that she was someone that she wasn’t. Introverted by nature, Allison had to be outgoing as well as know all of Lennon’s secrets to be convincing.

When Dylan reacts badly to Allison revealing this secret, she has to act quickly. She immediately accuses Dylan of stalking her so it makes him seem unreliable to the police. Allison’s quick wit allows her to continue to live as Lennon.
