In a recent datamine of NVIDIA’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service, a whole host of unannounced games—including long-awaited PC ports of PlayStation exclusives—were exposed. NVIDIA acknowledged the leak, saying the data was used only for “internal tracking” and contains “speculative titles.” If that’s the case, it’s worth taking this enticing data dump with an enormous rock of salt. But if it is accurate, then it’s an interesting glimpse at the next few years in gaming—and what big hitters like Sony, Square Enix, and Microsoft have in store. Let’s pick out some highlights, because a little speculation never hurt anyone.
For Sony, there are entries for possible PC versions of Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet & Clank (no specific game, but presumably the latest, Rift Apart), God of War, Horizon Forbidden West, Demon’s Souls, and the recently revealed Gran Turismo 7. This is all potentially exciting news for PC gamers, who have been waiting patiently for ports of Bloodborne and Ghost of Tsushima especially. But I wouldn’t get too excited. While the likes of Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn have made it to PC, it seems unlikely Sony would be quite so free and easy with its tentpole PlayStation 5 exclusives. It’s also worth noting that GeForce Now is a streaming platform, so these listings could relate to Sony’s own on-demand service, PS Now.
As for Microsoft, games mentioned in the leak include Project Holland (believed to be Fable), Gears 6, Project Typhoon (likely Contraband, a new co-op game from Avalanche), an untitled game by The Initiative (possibly Perfect Dark), and Obsidian’s next big RPG, Avowed. If this leak is actually legit, then Gears 6 is undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises here. I mean, obviously it’s not surprising that Microsoft would make another sequel to the popular, million-selling Gears series—but it’s the first anyone’s heard about it. Overall, though, Microsoft hasn’t suffered too much from this leak, especially compared to Square Enix.
Again, a reminder that this all might be bullshit, but one of the leaked Square Enix games is a remake of Chrono Cross. Released in 1999 for the original PlayStation, this follow-up to SNES classic Chrono Trigger has gained a cult following over the years, but is currently only playable on PlayStation. So a remake sounds very welcome indeed. Other Square Enix leaks include remakes/remasters of Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 9. The publisher already released a version of FF9 for modern consoles, so does this mean it might be cooking up a new version in the same vein as the FF7 remake? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t into that. There’s also an entry for Kingdom Hearts 4 and something called Tomb Raider Anniversary. A remaster of the 2007 Tomb Raider game developed by Crystal Dynamics, maybe?
Capcom next, and listings for Monster Hunter 6, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and a remake of Resident Evil 4 catch the eye. Resi 4 is a near-perfect game, so I don’t think it actually needs a remake—but I would like to relive that story with visuals powered by the latest incarnation of the RE Engine. However, the most exciting thing here has gotta be the potential for a second Dragon’s Dogma. This wild, imaginative, and completely absurd action RPG is one of Capcom’s best games, and I’d love to see it revisit it. EA, meanwhile, has listings for an RTX remaster of Mirror’s Edge (the original, hopefully) and Titanfall 3, and for Warner Bros, an RTX remaster of Batman: Arkham Knight. In this context, RTX likely means raytracing and other graphics tech supported by NVIDIA’s RTX range of GPUs.
Elsewhere in the leak there are references to a Half-Life 2 remaster (I’d love to see that game remade in the Half-Life: Alyx engine), Cities: Skylines 2, XCOM 3, Fight for Middle-earth (a new Monolith Lord of the Rings game, perhaps?), an unannounced Hangar 13 game (the studio behind Mafia 3 and the recent remake of the original), and Crysis 4. Just a huge number of potentially exciting unannounced games—but nothing that seems far-fetched, which does lend it some credibility. Even if this is all just placeholder stuff for the GeForce Now back-end, I’m sure some of the affected publishers must be pretty angry with NVIDIA right now. Especially with people like me picking the leak apart. But hey, it’s out there.
If this leak is accurate, we’ve just been given a pretty spectacular early look at the next few years of triple-A gaming—and beyond. With the likes of Knights of the Old Republic and Dead Space getting high profile remasters, the sheer number of remakes and re-releases on this list is perhaps unsurprising. That alone makes me think at least a good chunk of it is legitimate. This is all speculation, of course, but it’s still an interesting glimpse at the kinds of games we might be seeing at next year’s E3 and other big gaming conventions. Personally, I’m gonna remain firmly planted on the fence until I hear something more concrete about the games mentioned in the datamine. I’ve been burned by leaks before.
