There are plenty of video game crossovers that fans could get behind, but one of the most logical would be a cross between Pokemon and Monster Hunter as the two share a lot of commonalities and fans. Luckily, cosplayers are able to create their own mashups without having to wait for a game, which is just what one fan of both franchises did.

Posting to the largest Pokemon fan subreddit, r/Pokemon, user Mar-X showed off his incredible Pokemon X Monster Hunter crossover cosplay. The costume manages to capture the essence of Monster Hunter armor while being made out of some pretty distinct Pokemon. It captures the aesthetic of Monster Hunter Rise so well that the armor looks like real content included in the game.

While the armor certainly looks great, the true star of the show is the clever way Mar-X was able to incorporate the three different Pokemon into it. The Ho-Oh helmet is pretty straightforward, taking the head of the legendary rainbow Pokemon and fashioning its beak as a visor of sort over the wearer’s eyes. Its beautiful plumage is able to hang off the back in a way that slightly resembles different native headdresses.

Mar-X’s creativity really shines with his use of the Venomoth and Alolan Exeggutor to create two Monster Hunter items: a Kinsect and an Insect Glaive. The Venomoth is nearly unaltered from its original form as Kinsects essentially just look like hollowed-out giant bugs. The Insect Glaive on the other hand looks as if Mar-X beheaded an Alolan Exeggutor and repurposed it as a spear. The synergy between the two items shows off Mar-X’s knowledge of both Monster Hunter Rise as a Kinsect is only usable by players using an Insect Glaive.

Clarifying in the comment section, Mar-X says that the Aztec Eagle Warriors were his inspiration for the costume. He also adds that he was initially going to use the legendary Articuno for the headpiece, but that “Ho-Oh was a better fit for the Aztec look.”

Many commenters on the original Reddit post are calling on Capcom and Game Freak to make an official crossover happen so that items similar to Mar-X’s cosplay could be included in the Monster Hunter series. Some hoped that when it was announced that Monster Hunter Rise would be coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch that a Monster Hunter crossover was inevitable, but nearly six months after the game’s release, there doesn’t seem to be anything of that sort on the horizon.

Monster Hunter Rise is now available for the Nintendo Switch.
