Since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade provided a perfect conclusion to the trilogy and literally ended with the heroes riding into the sunset, Steven Spielberg always said that it would be the last Indy movie. Then, he made a fourth one, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was met with the same ferocious backlash as the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Instead of just calling it a day on a low note, Harrison Ford is being handed his dusty old fedora for one last adventure now that Disney has acquired Lucasfilm and, with it, the Indiana Jones franchise. Some fans are skeptical about Indiana Jones 5, but it could end up surprising us.

10 Skeptical: Steven Spielberg Isn’t Directing It

Every single Indiana Jones movie since Raiders of the Lost Ark has been directed by Steven Spielberg. His contributions to the movies are as integral as Harrison Ford’s performance and George Lucas’ storytelling. He was initially attached to direct the fifth movie but dropped out just before the COVID-19 pandemic went worldwide.

He has now been replaced with Ford v Ferrari’s James Mangold, who is certainly a fine filmmaker. However, many fans feel that the experience won’t be the same without Spielberg at the helm.

The fifth Indiana Jones movie is confirmed to be the iconic archeologist’s final adventure. Last Crusade was once “confirmed” to be the final movie, but with Harrison Ford pushing 80, this will probably be it.

Spielberg’s replacement, James Mangold, had directed Logan, which was Hugh Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine, and it provided a satisfying ending to the character’s decades-long on-screen journey. Logan provided closure in spades while also deconstructing the myths surrounding its hero. If Mangold can do this for Indy, then the fifth movie is in very safe hands.

8 Skeptical: Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull Was Pretty Awful

At its very best, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gave Indy fans a chance to see Dr. Jones back in action. At its worst, it contained an interminable number of ludicrous CGI-laden set pieces like Indy escaping a nuclear blast in a fridge and Shia LaBeouf swinging through the jungle with a bunch of monkeys. The film then culminated in the revelation that aliens were behind the whole thing.

Even fans who liked Crystal Skull admit that it pales in comparison to the near-perfect original trilogy. Indiana Jones 5 doesn’t have much hope of doing any better.

7 Excited: The Writers Are Desperate To Avoid Another Crystal Skull

It seems as though the powers that are behind the Indiana Jones franchise have recognized the flaws of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and are making concerted efforts to avoid repeating those mistakes.

The reason why the movie has taken so long to get off the ground is that the writers’ room, assembled by producer Frank Marshall, has been trying to make sure they get the story right.

6 Skeptical: It’s Setting Up A Big Franchise Expansion

Although Indiana Jones 5 has been confirmed to be Indy’s final adventure, Disney’s former chief Bob Iger said that the movie “won’t be just a one-off,” suggesting that it’s setting up a larger Indiana Jones cinematic universe.

This franchise isn’t the same as Star Wars or the MCU. A fifth Indy adventure will barely be able to justify its own existence. Fans don’t want a Mutt Williams trilogy and a Short Round miniseries and Sallah origin movie.

5 Excited: John Williams Is Returning To Write The Score

The fifth Indiana Jones movie is a lot like the Star Wars sequel trilogy in terms of the fact that it’s the long-awaited return of a Lucasfilm franchise that’s almost guaranteed to disappoint. But one thing that all Star Wars fans could agree was great about those movies was John Williams’ music.

Williams is returning to compose the score for Indiana Jones 5, so even if the story turns out to be nonsense and Ford phones in his performance, every scene will be draped in his distinctive orchestrations.

4 Skeptical: Harrison Ford Is Way Too Old To Play Indy

Harrison Ford was too old to play Indiana Jones in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and that was over a decade ago. The actor is about to become an octogenarian; he can’t swing across chasms and jump between moving vehicles anymore.

If the editor struggles to cut around Ford’s very visible age, Indiana Jones 5 could end up being a mess, much like the frenzied cutting in Liam Neeson’s later action movies.

3 Excited: Ford Nailed Han Solo And Rick Deckard’s Returns

Some Indy fans were disappointed with the older, slower, less involved version of their favorite hero found in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Harrison Ford didn’t completely phone in his performance, but he didn’t give it anywhere near the same dedication as the original trilogy.

Since the negative reception to Crystal Skull, Ford has reprised two of his other iconic roles – Han Solo and Rick Deckard – and pleased fans on both counts. Hopefully, this same energy will be felt in the fifth installment.

2 Skeptical: It’s Being Made Under Disney

Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy were technically at the helm of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but those movies were still released under the Disney banner and felt very much like corporate products of the Mouse House machine.

The new Indiana Jones movie is also being made under Disney, so there’s a chance it won’t take many risks or lean into the franchise’s edge, which would be a shame.

1 Excited: George Lucas Is An Executive Producer

Although it was initially misreported that he wouldn’t be involved, George Lucas is attached to the fifth Indiana Jones movie as an executive producer. That’s the same George Lucas who executive-produced Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it’s also the same George Lucas who created Indiana Jones in the first place.

Maybe Lucas’ disappointment with the Star Wars sequel trilogy – which he had no involvement in – will inspire him to step up his game for the new Indy movie.
