Avengers: Infinity War saw Thanos finally getting all the Infinity Stones and mounting them on the Infinity Gauntlet, but it also showed that Gamora’s plans for the orb with the power stone in Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t make sense. The Marvel Cinematic Universe reached its peak with the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the former seeing Thanos wiping out half of life in the universe with the snap of his fingers, and the former following the surviving heroes on their quest to undo the snap, defeat Thanos, and restore balance to the universe.

Infinity War also saw the Avengers, New Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and new heroes like Doctor Strange and Black Panther joining forces to stop Thanos from taking the Infinity Stones, though not even their combined efforts could stop him. Sadly, not all heroes who died in Infinity War and later in Endgame could be brought back when the Hulk undid the snap, as were the cases of Black Widow and Gamora, who both died as part of the process of getting the Soul Stone from Vormir. Gamora was one of the few characters in the MCU who knew about the Infinity Stones before Infinity War, which is why she did what she thought was best to keep one of them away from Thanos, but that was only proven to be a terrible plan.

Gamora made her MCU debut in 2014 in Guardians of the Galaxy, where she was still working for her adoptive father, Thanos, who sent Ronan the Accuser and his crew to retrieve the orb from Morag, which contained the Power Stone. However, Peter Quill/Star-Lord arrived first and took the orb with him, prompting Thanos to send Gamora, his most trusted “servant”, to get the orb from Quill. Gamora was aware of the orb’s power and sold it to The Collector, though once with him, the real power of the stone was revealed when The Collector’s assistant, Carina, grabbed it. Now, at that point in the MCU’s history, Gamora knew Thanos had begun his quest to find the Infinity Stones, and as she was also aware that the orb was very powerful, her plan to give it to a buyer to escape him was very short-sighted.

After the fiasco of selling the orb to The Collector and his whole place exploding, Ronan and his henchmen took the orb with them, though he refused to give it to Thanos and instead used the stone for his own interests. By the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, the Power Stone was kept in Xandar with the Nova Corps, though that later led Thanos to destroy Xandar to get the stone. Gamora’s plan to keep the orb away from Thanos made no sense and only led to more destruction and death, but some fans have found a way to justify this. While Gamora knew the orb contained something powerful that Thanos wanted and that he was looking for the Infinity Stones, she wasn’t fully aware of the power of it and the damage it could cause until Carina touched it, and by then, it was too late. Still, it seems quite reckless to get rid of such an object by giving it to a buyer, especially one like The Collector, and only made Thanos’ quest for that particular Stone a lot easier.

With the Infinity Saga now over, Gamora from the main timeline dead, and the current Gamora being the one from 2014, it’s unlikely future MCU movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or even Thor: Love and Thunder will address this minor issue, mostly because it doesn’t serve the narrative anymore – but it does give MCU fans something to think about.
