Intel is hosting esports tournaments in Tokyo next year in what will be a massive step towards the industry one day becoming its own Olympic event.

The esports industry is growing at an alarming rate. A number of titles are responsible for that such as Fortnite, CS:GO, and League of Legends, among others. Earlier this year, Fortnite held its first-ever World Cup. To give you an idea of exactly how popular esports can be, fans watched the qualifiers and the finals of the tournament for s staggering 80 million hours.

So, beyond filling gradually bigger arenas and pulling in more fans around the world, what does the future hole for esports? Well, there’s a hope that some games will one day have medal events at the Olympic games. When asked about this, IOC President Thomas Back claimed esports were too violent to be a part of the Olympics, according to Esports.net.

That hasn’t stopped Intel from pushing forward with the cause. The software giant has its foot in both worlds. It is a major sponsor of many esports tournaments, and also an official partner of next year’s Olympic Games. That’s why it will be hosting two massive esports tournaments in Tokyo, the host city of the 2020 Olympics, starting in June, a month before the games begin.

The Intel World Open will take place from June 22-24, 2019 and $500,000 will be up for grabs. $250,000 for Rocket League player and another $250,000 for Street Fighter V competitors. The choice of games is no accident either. Following the aforementioned comments about violence, a game like Fortnite or CS:GO likely wouldn’t sit well. A game that is a combination of racing and soccer and another featuring hand-to-hand combat is something else entirely.

How can you try to qualify for these tournaments, we hear you ask? Well, twelve different nations will be pre-selected for the tournaments. Much like the actual Olympics, those countries will then hold qualifiers in order to determine who will represent them in Tokyo. Four representatives will be chosen from each country, and they will go on to a final round of qualifiers in Poland at the beginning of June.
