The sheer breadth of Invasion’s production means the Apple TV+ series is becoming the global epic Heroes promised to be. Invasion follows the individual stories of individuals spread across the globe as they encounter the social and psychological impacts of an imminent alien takeover on Earth. Despite two differing genres, Invasion is already drawing several parallels with the hit NBC drama Heroes, which initially was built upon an equally impressive, global scope.
Tim Kring’s comic-book-style superhero drama first burst onto the scene in 2006, with Heroes’ first season garnering high praise and discussion for its ability to weave a series of disparate superhero origin stories into a compelling and slick narrative. The NBC superhero-driven drama tells the stories of ordinary people who discover that they have superhuman abilities and chronicles the increasingly grandiose effects these abilities take effect in the characters’ lives as they work together to prevent a myriad of catastrophic futures. While the final two seasons of Heroes failed to live up to the high expectations the show had set for itself, seasons 1 and 2 represent a perfect example of how to deliver intricate, gripping, and multicultural storylines in a cohesive and exciting package.
To date, Invasion is becoming the global epic that Heroes promised to be before the latter’s sharp decline in quality. Apple TV+’s Invasion is showing many of the same traits that made Heroes’ first two seasons such a rampant success, including running a series of disparate plotlines that look to be converging into climactic events, as well as representing differing global cultures in a nuanced way. The two shows even share visual traits, with Invasion’s title graphic looking incredibly similar to the iconic Heroes eclipse logo that was initially released 11 years ago.
One of the biggest charges leveled at Tim Kring’s later seasons of Heroes is that the NBC drama lost sight of what made the show great. The initial two seasons of Heroes tell riveting, individual stories from various cultures globally and deliver on the promise of a climactic event for the series (the heroes fighting the villains for the fate of the world). Invasion’s alien reasoning is currently setting up something similar, with the show’s myriad of character arcs seemingly converging on the chance to save the world. Both the stories of Luke Malik (Azhy Robertson) and Mitsuki Yamato (Shioli Kutsuna) are prime examples here, with each character struggling with familial disputes and their place in the world while Invasion’s overarching narrative lays the breadcrumbs for a higher-stakes climax down the road. This layered storytelling is something later seasons of Heroes are desperately missing, with the series devolving instead into a CGI-driven mess as the scope of each character’s narrative narrows.
While it is unclear whether or not Heroes has directly inspired Invasion creators Simon Kinberg and David Weil, the pair seem to have taken notes from earlier seasons of the NBC series. Apart from similar narrative structures, the two shows also have markedly similar title graphics that may comprise a more concrete homage to the Heroes series. The iconic eclipse logo used by Heroes’ in almost every facet of their marketing has been replicated by Apple TV+’s Invasion, who also use an eclipse behind the letter “o” in their title sequence. Whether by coincidence or design, Invasion looks to be inexorably becoming the globally structured epic Heroes initially promised to be.
