Apple has announced its most affordable iPhone yet, the iPhone SE 2020. With a starting price of $399, it’s the cheapest and the smallest device in Apple’s current iPhone lineup, yet it comes with the same A13 Bionic chipset found on the more expensive iPhone 11 versions. Here’s what you need to know about Apple’s latest smartphone.
The first iPhone SE launched in 2016, and although based on the design of the iPhone 5s, the internals were more similar to the iPhone 6. The Cupertino giant has followed the original strategy with the new iPhone SE 2020, considering Apple has decided to use the same design as the iPhone 8, but upgraded the internals to (almost) match the latest iPhone 11 models. Making the latest iPhone a great option for those who prefer a smaller phone in general, but don’t want to compromise on performance and features.
With coronavirus having cancelled all major events, Apple made the iPhone SE 2020 announcement via a press release. The new affordable iPhone is powered by the latest A13 Bionic chipset that’s found in the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This is currently the most powerful chip from Apple and should make the iPhone SE great for gaming, photography, multi-tasking, and more. The A13 Bionic is also a highly efficient chip which should help to enable battery life on the smartphone. In addition, the new iPhone SE also supports dual-SIM with eSIM, Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit LTE, and offers fast-charging where the battery can be charged to 50 percent in less than 30 minutes. The iPhone SE will be available for purchase on April 24, with pre-orders starting April 17, and available in Black, White, and Red color options.
iPhone SE 2020 Design & Features
The iPhone SE 2020 uses the popular design of the iPhone 8 with the familiar TouchID Home button for security, a glass back, and features an IP67 rating for dust and water-resistance. The phone comes loaded with a 4.7-inch Retina HD Display, which although still LCD, supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The most important feature of the new iPhone SE 2020 is likely to be the rear camera. Here, Apple has included a 12-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, Optical Image Stabilization, and Smart HDR support. The photography benefits also include Portrait Mode (with six Portrait Lighting effects) and Depth Control. In terms of video, the iPhone SE can record 4K at up to 60 frames per second, and 1080p slo-motion videos at up to 240 fps.
An affordable iPhone will be favored by many and especially one that comes with improved performance and cameras. The iPhone SE 2020 could also prove to be a great option as a first iPhone for those who might be new to smartphones or considering switching from over from Android to Apple’s ecosystem
